I experienced the same delay (about one minute) on startup after 
applying this update.  The delay doesn't bother me, but the first thing 
in the output after the long pause is the message "Thread failed to 
initialize" which I don't remember seeing before.  My startup output 
looks like this:

Auto detecting CPU
Using SSE2 Optimised binary.
Enabling debug mode
Server will auto-restart if there is a crash.
Could not locate steam binary:./steam, ignoring.

Console initialized.
Game.dll loaded for "Team Fortress"
Thread failed to initialize
Particles: Missing 'particles/error.pcf'
maxplayers set to 24

<etc.>

Server seems to be working fine, but is that message normal?
