I guess I don't see the variables.....

In Classic the machine sends off a handful of IP packets and waits for another set to be returned.
In X the machine sends off a handful of IP packets and waits for another set to be returned.

The router deals with everything else.

The modem is using the same connection. Were I to use a directly connected moden, this would not be possible. Rebooting would initiate a new connection and would introduce all the vaguaries of the telco and the modems on the other end. (new telephone routing, different modem answering at my local ISP, etc.) I cannot control the routing of the packets through the "internet cloud", but seeing a consistant 30-40% reduction of throughput with the only controllable change being the OS leads me to believe that the OS *may* ba a factor. This observation occured through enough iterations over a two week period of time that I determined that X wasn't the OS for me. (FWIW, I have a client who owns a Bondi iMac and a couple FP iMacs. The Bondi runs 9.1 and the FPs run X. The Bondi consistantly renders webpages faster than the FPs do. And the FPs have three times the processor speed.)

The test is a timed sending of a 470k image.

Enlighten me please. What are the variables that would be *decreased* by initiating a different connection in the test?

Regards,

Jim

Run the modem off the machine w/o the router and see if issue persists. There are so many variables here that I think the machine is not the cause.
