What Version of OSX are you using? 10.2.6? And what two browsers did you use? Safari, or perhaps the slow as molasses Internet Explorer? Remember that the software is not identical, even though it has the same name in both 9 and X.
I must admit that I haven't done any proper testing with 9, as I haven't bootet into 9 since last spring, when I needed to run Disk Warrior on a 10.1-related problem, and I probably haven't used the modem in 9 for 2 years. (A modest lie: I had to boot into 9 to install StarCraft some months ago...) I use a modem a few times a year when I visit my parents. I let their iMac dial up and then using "share internet connection", and that doesn't seem slower than it should at all, downloading large files (about 40kbit/sec, the last time I did so). Rant -- Jaguar is so much better than 9. Just try getting uptimes like these: http://www.hitup.org -- /rant Can I ask you a question on the measuring of the download? Did you do it with a stopwatch or by looking at the numbers at the bottom in the browser. They can differ a lot on the same speed. But if it possible, urge them to go to xDSL or Cable of some kind. It really really makes a difference in how you work with your computer, almost a different paradigm.
