It is simply embarrassing to not be able to open a word processing document on a high-end computer. Even low and high end Dells come with word processing software!
As far as I know, TextEdit was updated in Panther to accept Word document files (with some limitations).
It will not open any of the Word or AW files we have.
Just out of curiosity, what word processing software is available on lowend Dells?
The latest Dell catalog shows every Dell comes with some sort of word processor or office productivity suite... WordPerfect, MS Office Basic Edition, MS Office Small Business Edition, MS Works Suite, or MS Office Professional Edition.
