I'm no kind of Mac expert. I have several ancient Macs that I am hoping to
rehabilitate, and have had some success with (most of them work to some
degree). Basically, we have Win and Linux here (I want to get Ubuntu on to some
of the Macs when I can get to it).

Earlier this week I acquired my first imac, a Lime, 266 Mhz G3. Then I managed
to get a matching keyboard/mouse.

I plugged them all together, and powered up.

I got the "chime". The power switch lit up amber. I waited. After a bit, the
power switch went to green, and I got a raster, with an alternating Mac face
and question mark. Since I had expected the software was messed up, this was
not a surprise.

I left the room to get an OS 8.5 CD and manual. When I returned, the switch was
back to amber and the screen was dark,

I tried to reboot, to no avail. I inserted the CD and tried to boot from it.
Nothing.

When the thing tries to start, I usually catch a momentary flicker at or near
the CD drive. When I popped the 8.5 CD, I noticed that it had just spun down
(was still rotating slightly).

Pulled the plug, waited, replugged. Nothing.

Mind you, I get the chime every time, but nothing else happens.

I noticed that while I could power on via the keyboard, I could only power off
on the front panel.

I caught some Zs ...

Today, I plugged the keyboard/mouse into a spare USB port on a peecee (Win2K),
and it was detected, and it worked just fine.

I plugged it back into the imac, but nothing had changed. I tried the caps lock
key, which lit up nicely when attached to the w2k box and toggled. It did not
light up.

I spent 1/2 hour searching for a large paperclip, finally settled for an
ordinary (#1 Gem) one, poked the reset hole. Got the chime. Nothing else.

I can't think of anything else to try. What do I do next?

Thanks for any help,
