OK. I found I already had such a battery (in a dead mac), and it tested at 3.6 volts (slightly over, in fact) and is still in date. I installed it. (Oh, and sure enough, the old battery is quite dead.) I'll find out tomorrow if the clock kept time. But it did nothing to solve the main problem, namely that I can get the machine to boot and run once, but then if I try a Reset, even from the Menu, it goes to sleep (evidently, since the light goes amber). But I still get the memory problem (not "error", "problem", whatever that means) when it's about 10% into the bootup progress bar. Will see if I can scrounge some appropriate SODIMMs - nothing on hand here.
