OK. I found I already had such a battery (in a dead mac), and it tested at 3.6
volts (slightly over, in fact) and is still in date.

I installed it.

(Oh, and sure enough, the old battery is quite dead.)

I'll find out tomorrow if the clock kept time. But it did nothing to solve the
main problem, namely that I can get the machine to boot and run once, but then
if I try a Reset, even from the Menu, it goes to sleep (evidently, since the
light goes amber).

Then I have to shut down (I always unplug as well, because I need to get the
thing off the kitchen table) for an undetermined amount of time: more than just
a few minutes, possibly a couple of hours ... somewhere in there.

8.5.1.

Yes. It tells me I have 128Mb in one slot and 32 in the other. When I replaced
the battery, I reseated the 128 stick. But I still get the memory problem (not
"error", "problem", whatever that means) when it's about 10% into the bootup
progress bar. Will see if I can scrounge some appropriate SODIMMs - nothing on
hand here.
