Hi Bill,

Startup using these keys: Option/Command/P/R   Hold
through 4 chimes. The PRAM reset will let your
confused iMac boot to the Drive or CD. I would do what
I discribed with the CD in it and after chime 4 hold
down the "C" key until the CD window starts to load.
CD screen will have many little white cds on the
background. Then you can go to the Utilities folder on
the CD and Run those on the HD.

If the HD fails to show up or fail to be repaired; You
can open Hard Drive Setup from the same utilities
folder and reformat the dive and reinstall the OS.

If all that fails let me know what happened.
