Have you checked whether the battery is OK? It must be 3.6V - anything a little lower: replace it!

Without a functioning PRAM battery any Mac starts behaving weirdly - specifically boot problems.

Yes, you have to open up the machine to replace it.... Not all that difficult, but I would say you need Apples take-apart manual.

Don't know what version OS is on the CD you made it boot from, but if it is any pre-OSX : pull down the Apple menu (top left hand corner of the screen) and select "About this Mac..." (or some such). Gives you a little window telling you the version of the OS and how much RAM is installed.

If you want to know more, there is the program "Apple System Profiler" somewhere on the install CD (still presuming this is pre-OSX). It will tell you all sorts of things about the hardware in your Mac.
