OK, did all that (it had been unplugged for ~24 hrs if that matters), and sure enough it came up from the CD! I ran the utility to verify the HD, and it passed, so I decided to reboot from it. Uh-oh. Nuthin'! What's worse, I once again can't boot from the CD either, and I can't even get the four chimes using that remarkable awkward four-finger salute! I tried lots of things, unplugged it for over a minute, etc., but to no avail. Now, here's one thing: when it did boot up, there was a message about a memory problem ... nevertheless, I was able to run stuff after clearing the message. I'm reluctant to perform surgery if I can avoid it, though I suppose eventually I will have to. The former owner told me he had maxed out the memory, but I never got far enough to see what it thought it had in there, though I did observe over 5Gb of the HD was available. So the thing does work -- sometimes. At this point, I've pulled the plug again, and am awaiting further advice.
