>Have you checked whether the battery is OK? It must be 3.6V - anything >a little lower: replace it!
I've seen them work properly to as low as 1.0 volt. In fact, I've never had to replace a battery before it gets down to the 1.0 to 1.2 volt range. However, because of recent problems I've had with an iMac I did some checking on what the "official" stance was on how low the voltage can go safely, and I've found pretty much if it drops below 3.0-3.3 volts, it is recommended to replace it. (I haven't tracked down a battery with over 3.3 volts in it yet to test and see if it fixes my problems). I'd say, if you are having odd problems, replacing the battery can't hurt. >Yes, you have to open up the machine to replace it.... Not all that >difficult, but I would say you need Apples take-apart manual. Actually, on the tray load, it is easy. Turn off the iMac, flip it upside down. Remove the screw under the handle in the back (the screw may not remove from the plastic, it has a little ring in it to keep it in the plastic... I've seen many where this has gone bad and the screw does come all the way out), pull the back cover off. Remove the two screws holding the motherboard cage in place, disconnect the cables, slide the cage out. Flip the cage over, replace the battery. Flip the cage back over, slide it back into the iMac. Make sure you keep the cables clear of the cage so they don't get caught, also make sure the two guide posts go under the plastic track (this is perspective of looking down at the bottom of the inverted iMac). Be sure to fully seat the cage, you may have to stick your fingers into the CD slot in the front to help align the CD drive. Reconnect the cables, put the two screws back in, replace the bottom plastic, tighten the screw under the handle, flip the iMac back upright and power it on. -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
