I don't mean to suggest that throwing money at a problem is always
the right choice, but if this 2nd son is in anything beyond grade
school, I'd suggest to you that your time and money would be better
spent getting him something fairly new (G4 class at least).
Apple's "Sale" section has refurb'd Mac minis for well under $500,
secondhand G4 iBooks (on the low end) can often be found for around
that same price, and I've seen refurb'd eMacs even go below $400.
Might be a fair few bucks to put together, but the end result is so
nice and modern, and you save yourself a boatload of potential
problems (since refurbs are covered under warranty).
If even those are out of reach, at least get the kid a G3 iMac with
Firewire and load it up with as much RAM as it can handle -- that
should be bearable for a while, and they're just going for cheap on
ebay and craigslist and suchlike. I had a G3/700 with 768MB of RAM
and a faster, quieter large HD (120GB) and I just loved it. Ran OS X
like a charm.
Any thoughts on this will be appreciated and welcomed. TIA for all
your kindnesses, considerations and time in helping me on this.
