I don't mean to suggest that throwing money at a problem is always
the right choice, but if this 2nd son is in anything beyond grade
school, I'd suggest to you that your time and money would be better
spent getting him something fairly new (G4 class at least).
You've hit the nail on the head, money is very much too short in
supply, and for justification my workhorse BeigeG3MT(w/G4 500Zif
and mostly maxedout+) is the best it has gotten here in my Legacy
land, and he complains that the iMac uses too much of his study
desk's limited real estate and he has too little room to study,
sos I've been working on an iBook 366SE Firewire that needed it's
mobo swapped, and now only is needing a good: "Japanese Language
Input Keyboard" replacement for him to get back at work on his
studies and regain some of his desk too, does perhaps anyone have
one gathering dust that they'd be willing to part with cheaply??,
do Please don't hesitate to email me off-list.

If even those are out of reach, at least get the kid a G3 iMac with
Firewire and load it up with as much RAM as it can handle -- that
should be bearable for a while,
snip
The iMac with the problem here(subriding on this thread-btw) is a
400Mhz USB/FW(either DV or SE, don't recall at the moment for my
insufficent internal caffiene level) and 'til lately quite nicely
working, but after swapping out the PRAM Batt. and it's RAM with an
extra 128Mb pc100 chip pulled from my BeigeG3, hit the CUDA, it's
still giving me only a single tone(no not chime) on any attempt to
bootup(no the power switch is not stuck down). And of course, my
not knowing now what to try next.

Any and All ideas, suggestions, advice will be appreciated and
very much welcomed. TIA

Respectful of GURUs
