This is just guessing, but here is one possibility. Some Macs and pc's are very tempermental about the adding of new ram because the firmware/bios is spd dependent In some cases, if you mix the wrong timings with new ram such as the original cloking at cl3 while your new ram clocks at say cl 2.5 the memory bandwidth can default to lower speeds which could possibly cause your symtoms.
