That particular iMac will only take DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • UNBUFFERED •
NON-ECC • DDR400 RAM. If you try to put anything else in it, it
won't work...i.e. won't start up.

adding of new ram because the firmware/bios is spd
dependent In some cases, if you mix the wrong timings
with new ram such as the original cloking at cl3 while
your new ram clocks at say cl 2.5 the memory
bandwidth can default to lower speeds which could
possibly cause your symtoms. I don't know your exact
model but I thought it might be worth flipping it out
there.
