The reason most 1U rack cases only support 2 drives is not technical, but physical...the drives produce massive heat and cannot be cooled effectively. I would be very careful about checking the cooling specs on any drive case. For cooling reasons, we only use 4U cases for RAID and put no more than 7 drives (1 RAID array) into a single 4U rack case. With 90CFM of air flow and a large air space behind the drives, we keep the drives very cool!
Ultimately, we feel the best rack setup is a 1U server with a 4U SCSI RAID subsystem. Higher density configurations are available, but the long-term reliability could be suspect.
