In theory if you installed the OpenGL version of Java 3D and OpenGL
hardware support was not available then Java 3D should render purely
software and we'd darn well better not have any lock ups (otherwise it's
clearly a Java 3D problem).

But if you install the DirectX version of Java 3D aren't you still going
through some driver issues?  I think you'd have to go to a very old
video card to not have some DirectX 3D acceleration.  And even if you
aren't getting video card acceleration I imagine there is always a
possibility of a conflict with a DirectX driver (after all there are
MANY versions of DirectX).

The overall stability issue of 3D is something that concerns me.  It
certainly isn't just a Java 3D issue (other software hits lots of quirks
too).  Developing 3D software currently seems like a tech support
nightmare (unless you give your customers the standard "must be a driver
problem update your video card drivers" answer).
