Because I've been reading this list for many years and I know the direction this topic will end up going! I don't want this to become a thread about Ancestry.
Note that I also wrote " Unless it's on how to incorporate data from Ancestry (or any other website) into Legacy....." The "third-party products" which are acceptable to discuss are those specifically sold by us as add-on programs. You can find a list of them on the website under the Add-Ons menu. You are free to discuss how to create web pages in Legacy. However, if you wish to get into more detail about editing the HTML web pages, best FTP programs for uploading, etc, there's a group started by one of our listers at http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/WUL/, which is populated by people who are very well versed in HTML and websites. The purpose of this group is described as "a self-help group for genealogists wishing to create and improve their websites which are based on the Legacy genealogical software. In particular its aim is to give support to those with no knowledge of website construction. It is also anticipated that the group will assist those with more experience in overcoming the programming questions/problems relating to Legacy which we all meet and try to overcome on a regular basis." Please review the LUG list guidelines at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Etiquette.asp. "The purpose of the LUG is to provide a forum for mutual help and the friendly exchange of ideas related to the use of Legacy Family Tree and its add-on programs, only. Please keep on topic. "Send messages only in plain text "2. Please stay on topic of Legacy and Legacy Add-on Programs Stay on the topic of Legacy and its add-on programs, which is the sole purpose of the LUG User Group. "5. Please only include relevant return text when replying. Mail boxes can quickly become cluttered by with meaningless "me too" or "thank you" messages that are devoid of any other relevant text, and replies containing pages and pages of an ongoing message thread." Seriously? I've only been on this list a few days, but it sure seems to have a very hostile tone. I really don't get why I'm getting my hands smacked for this query. What specifically are you reading that suggests any questions simply about the pros and cons of Ancestry? Unless you are stating that a discussion of the pros and cons of using Ancestry in cooperation with Legacy is also *way* off topic? This is the LUG, correct? I am in fact a LU, and a new one at that, only a couple of weeks. Would you agree that ones genealogical database program is the heart of their system? In this case it should go w/o saying we are talking about Legacy. As a brand new paying customer of Legacy, I am curious how to get the most value out of it. Call me confused, but Legacy integration with third party products, specifically in relation to my own online presence, seems to me it couldn't be more on topic. Surly you are not suggesting that Legacy is the end-all be-all tool for genealogists and any posts to the contrary are off limits here? While I am certainly interested in your acceptable list of topic in how to incorporate into Legacy stuff found online, I am just as interested to know how best to do the opposite of that - move what I have in Legacy online somehow. Who better to answer that then the LU's? If I have completely misunderstood the use of the term 'user's group' in this case, please advise. And, if that is in fact the case, let me offer my apologies in advance to the users and customer support of this list.
