Hi, all, FYI - Reading from the Coast Guard publication "Federal Requirements & Safety Tips for Recreational Boats," page 33, "Marine Sanitation Devices:" it says "....the operator must secure the device in a manner that prevents any discharge. Some acceptable methods are: padlocking.....valves in the closed position, using non releasable wire tie to hold.....valves in the closed position, closing .....valves in the closed position and removing handle, locking the door........to the space enclosing the toilets........"
I've opted for the "wire tie" method on Apella. Happy Sailing. Most valves have a removable handle. My black water discharge valve is a Wilcox bronze seacock and I just leave the handle off and stowed elsewhere. I also tighten the adjustment nuts to prevent seepage. Although the CG has rarely checked my black water system, and never in the last 8 or 9 years, the handle was always removed and they always passed the system. It has been most often checked by other types of cops, the harbormaster in Provincetown MA even demanding I flush down dye tablets to prove a holding tank was on line. That one was the start of a chain of events that eventually led to the curing of my decades-long sciatica pain, so you never know... Of course the whole concept is silly as we can actually open the valve any time we wish. My head has a Y valve one side to holding tank and one side over the side. I leave it in the holding tank position, but it does not have a lock. Is a lock required? Thanks! Tom <ATT00001.c>
