Hazardous bars are not only west coast issue. The entrance to the Merrimack
River at Newburyport, MA is notorious for its breaking bar when the tide and
wind are opposite and it's often closed until conditions moderate. The Coast
Guard and harbormaster often station a vessel at the entrance to the river to
prohibit small craft from crossing the bar under severe breaking conditions.
Lives are lost each year at that location by unwary or foolish mariners and
swimmers. A young woman died earlier this year when she was trapped by the
incoming tide and was swept out to sea.
