Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm as
usual for Look North. Paul will have the forecast and my special guest tonight
is the feminist, Germaine Greer. She’s coming to our part of the world to do
her one woman show and I’ll be talking to Germaine on the programme tonight.
And of course, we’ll have all the rest of the day’s news.

Tonight, on the programme I’ll be looking at the uncertain future faced by
hundreds of workers at the Birdseye factory in Hull as Unilever announce that
it’s putting the site up for sale. I’m also going to be looking at the campaign
raised by university students to allow gay men to donate blood. And also
tonight, we’ll have some live music in the studio. BBC Radio Humberside’s Raw
Talent will be live at the music venue, The Lamp in Hull, at a very sought
after gig tonight. Lots of interest in this one. Nick Harper, the son of the
legendary folk singer, Roy Harper, is performing there and we’re lucky enough
to get him in the studio to perform for us. So a busy programme tonight. I hope
you can join me then.

Sofa Tour

Thanks to everyone, who came along to Grimsby today for the Sofa Tour. We’ve
just finished and it was great to see you all. I’m now looking forward to next
Thursday when Paul and I will both be in the Waterside shopping centre in
Lincoln. If you’re in the Lincoln area next Thursday, and you can make it along
on Thursday morning from between 11am and 1pm for the Sofa Tour, I look forward
to meeting you then!

Anne Diamond

I’ve had loads of emails asking if we could have Anne Diamond on the programme.
As you know, she’s on Celebrity Fit Club at the moment on the television and
has been in the news in her desperate attempt to lose weight with this little
minor operation she had to help her. A lot of emails have come in from people
saying they can relate to her story and what an interesting guest she would be
on the programme. Well, I’ve passed all your thoughts onto our producers, but
I’m sure she’s very busy at the moment, but if we can get Anne on the programme
then of course I’ll let you know first in the Levy Letter.

Property

I see from a survey out that Hull is still the cheapest place in the UK to buy
a house. And also at the other end of the scale, more homes, worth one million
pounds or more, were sold each day in the last three months of last year,
official figures reveal. It’s the highest number of million pound properties
ever sold in this country and proves the top end of the property market is
booming! So there you are. Lots of houses sold were worth over a million
pounds! Interesting to see as well, over in Cherry Burton way, I was looking in
the paper at several houses there at the weekend, were selling at well over the
million pound mark, but Hull is still the cheapest place in the UK to buy a
property.

Valentine’s Day

Well, it’s Valentine’s Day next Tuesday on the 14th February. How would you
like to send a message to your loved one in the Levy Letter? Well, if you do,
then send me your message, the words that you want putting in and the name of
your loved one and we’ll put it in on Tuesday on Valentine’s Day. Of course you
can get in touch with me at the usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And talking of Valentine’s Day, are you worried about what to get your loved
one? Does it annoy you how much shops put up the prices for gifts on February
14th? Well, there’s no need to worry anymore as the price of true love is
falling! Five years ago, a dozen red roses delivered to your partner on
Valentine’s Day would have cost £60, but this year they can be yours for just
£16! A well-known supermarket chain is slashing the prices of their delivered
roses in an attempt to take on the ever-increasing florists’ prices! The
Valentine’s Day market is big business with retailers and restaurateurs
desperate to cash in on us lovesick consumers and is estimated to be worth over
£40 million pounds! Can you believe that? Well, there’s no excuse now for us,
as the price of home-delivered roses has now been slashed from an average £60
to £16! I can hear a lot of men breathing a sigh of relief about that one!

Women Waiting

Women are waiting until thirty to marry, if they get married at all! Well,
those are the latest statistics. I don’t know what you think about that. Most
women are waiting until they are nearly thirty before they marry. A smaller
proportion of the population are choosing to marry and growing numbers of those
who do are delaying tying the knot. Analysis of marriage shows that the average
age for the first marriage of a woman is just over twenty-nine – the oldest
ever recorded! And that’s up from twenty-eight in the previous year. Only
fifteen years ago, a woman was likely to be married by the age of twenty –five.
Men, though, are married for the first time, on average, by the age of
thirty-one. That’s up from twenty-seven in the 1990s. So there you are. We’re
all getting married later on in life and more and more of us are deciding not
to marry at all. On that subject, of course, I can say absolutely nothing!

Drop Me Line

If you’ve got a story that you think I should know about or if you’ve got a
photograph that you’d like us to show on the Big Screen halfway through the
programme, or if there’s something for Leave it to Levy – a problem you’ve got
that you think we could tackle on your behalf, then do drop me a line. Send me
all the details and of course let me have a contact telephone number for you.
It’s the usual address to get in touch with me any time – [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, that’s it from me for today. I’d better get on and prepare the programme,
having been out of the office this morning in Grimsby spending some time with
you there on the Sofa Tour. Don’t forget, I would love to see you on the sofa
next Thursday in Lincoln. I hope you can join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care, bye for now

Peter
