Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well. I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm. I’ll
have all the day’s news and Paul will have the forecast. I’ll also be talking
to a psychic tonight as well! The well-known psychic, Derek Acora. So for some
spooky and ghostly goings on, tune in tonight for that!

Also tonight, I’ll be talking to some villagers in Lincolnshire, who claim the
MOD are breaking their own rules with low flying military helicopters. We’ll
also be revealing how tidal power may be used to power our homes in Yorkshire
and Lincolnshire. I’ll be finding out the latest on a Hull company’s bid to
harness the tidal power of the river Humber.

As you know, I launched an exclusive Levy Letter competition the other day to
win a pair of tickets to see David Gray perform. Lots of you knew the answer to
the question – in which 1992 film did David Gray make a cameo appearance and
for which same film did he also write the title track, which appeared on his
White Ladder album? Well, tune in tonight, because I’ll let you know the answer
and I’ll be announcing the winner as well! I hope you can join me then.

Sofa Tour

Don’t forget tomorrow is the big day when we’re starting something called the
Sofa Tour where Paul and I will be visiting two or three shopping centres in
our region. We’ll have nothing to do for two hours other than sit on the sofa
and talk to you. You can come and sit with us on the sofa of course. So come
and say hello. If you want to come along and meet up and have a chat, then it’s
the Freshney Place shopping centre in Grimsby tomorrow, Thursday, from between
11am and 1pm. I hope you can make it along. So that’s Grimsby tomorrow from
11am, I hope to see you there.

Maternity

On the programme and in the Levy Letter on Monday, we were talking about the
maternity and birthing unit at Castle Hill Hospital and the fact that it is
currently under review. I’ve had loads of emails and messages from people, who
have had their babies there and are giving great support to the centre. Let me
just read you one. This one comes from Kay – “I gave birth to my daughter there
in 2004 and thought it was the most wonderful experience that any new Mum could
have. In such wonderful surroundings, with fabulous staff, the prospect of
closing such a tremendous place fills me horror. I shall be writing to my MP
and will be doing my bit to try and save it. Women should be given the choice
for a natural birth and the Jubilee Centre is a wonderful place to have a
baby.”

There were loads more messages like that one, so thank you very much indeed for
all that response. Most grateful to you. Don’t forget, if you want to get in
touch on any issue, then drop me a line. Also, if you’ve got some photos (we’re
looking for some more pictures for our Big Screen), if you’ve got a good view,
which you think we could use on the programme, or if you’ve got a problem that
you think we could deal with on Leave it to Levy, then of course you can get me
direct on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Lettuce

This one will be of interest to our part of the world. Of course, a lot of
lettuce is grown in Lincolnshire. Sales of salads are actually up, big style,
but sales of lettuce in the traditional form that we buy it, is down. We buy
now already cut up lettuce in plastic bags. Sales of some varieties of
pre-washed and pre-prepared salads have soared by more than 600% in one year!
The increase has been at the expense of the more traditional whole lettuce
where demand has gone decidedly limp! Bagged salads didn’t exist before 1992,
yet about two thirds of households now buy them regularly. Consumers have been
drawn to them, because they save on washing and chopping lettuce! Their
popularity has helped turn lettuce into a year-round product, rather than just
a summer one, whilst boosting the salad market to more than 1.25 billion pounds
a year. So, we’re eating more salads and we’re opting for the lazy option of
pre-washed, pre-prepared salad in bags!

Brain

I see that as we all get older we want to stay alert and sharp. It says here,
in this article I’ve been reading that your brain has astonishing capabilities,
but like the rest of the body, it needs to be exercised regularly. There are
some top tips here to help keep your brain younger, if you’re getting on in
life, a bit like me. Always have breakfast, eat more fish, eat curries! The
compound that gives the curry its mustard yellow appearance is thought to ward
off Alzheimer’s. Learn an instrument or a foreign language. Too late for that
I’m afraid. Drink wine – yes, will have some of that! Drink coffee – again,
yes, I’ll have some of that, although I don’t think Gillian McKeith will
approve of that. Listen to classical music! Particularly classical music makes
your brain work faster. One study of a classroom of unmanageable teenagers
showed that classical music made them more receptive. Sleep is needed to
regenerate certain parts of the body, especially the brain. Take up a!
hobby and chew gum – I don’t know what that’s all about. And finally, have
sugary drinks. Again, I don’t think Gillian McKeith would be happy about that.
But anyway, some tips there to keep your brain younger!

Well, that’s it from me for today. Join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm for all
the day’s news and Wednesday’s Look North. Look out for your Levy Letter
tomorrow. And if there’s someone you know, who’s not signed up for the Levy
Letter, then get them to do so. Tell them to go to either one of the two
addresses at the bottom of the page, click on Levy Letter and follow the
instructions through. They will get their first Levy Letter the first day after
they sign up and then every day after that! Thanks for reading.

Take care, bye for now

Peter
