Hello, it’s Peter here. Welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.
We’ll have all the day’s news and Paul will have the forecast.

There’s some breaking news coming in at the moment regarding an explosion at a
North Sea gas rig. News coming in suggests that two people were injured and
many were airlifted to safety. We’ll have more on that of course tonight.

Plus, I’ll have the latest on plans to improve Lincolnshire roads after the
fatal accident on the A52 near Grantham this week.

Plus, do you remember in the early days of Breakfast television, the Green
Goddess, Diana Moran? She was the first keep-fit lady first thing in the
morning and she’ll be joining me on the programme tonight for a chat.

And are you green fingered? Well, allotments are apparently coming back into
fashion with many people turning back toward the ‘Good Life’ and cultivating
their own vegetable patch! Amid growing concerns for a healthy living lifestyle
with home grown food, more and more of us are picking up the spade again. We’ll
have all this tonight on the programme at 6.30pm on BBC1.

Sofa Tour

Thanks very much indeed to everyone, who came along to the Sofa Tour today in
Lincoln. We were in the Waterside shopping centre. Lots of people came down to
see us. We had a lovely morning and it was great to meet and chat with people.
If you came down, then thank you very much indeed. And stay tuned for the
latest news on our next port of call with the Sofa Tour. And also in the coming
weeks, we’ll have some special Levy Letter pens. So stay tuned for news on
those. When they arrive, then I’ll send you the details on how to get hold of
your own free Levy Letter pen! More on that shortly.

Smoking

I’ve had loads of emails on the subject of smoking - many from people, who go
to pubs and clubs and are concerned that they won’t be able to smoke anymore
and asking if we could talk about it on the programme. Well, I think every
programme going is talking about smoking at the moment, so what we’ll do is,
we’ll keep the comments on smoking contained to the Levy Letter. So if you’ve
got a view – either for or against these latest changes that have been
announced, then get in touch. Let me know what they are and I’ll read them out
in the Levy Letter. If you want to write in on any subject at all, or if you’ve
got an idea for a guest for the programme, or if you’ve got a Leave it to Levy
that you think we might be able to deal with and tackle on the programme, then
drop me a line. Just email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Babies

Of course, on Valentine’s Day, David Cameron became a father again with the
birth of his baby boy. So congratulations to David and to Samantha. And talking
of babies, singing to babies really is good for them, scientists have
confirmed. Not only does a lullaby stop them crying and makes them less
irritable, it’s also good for their health as it makes them less likely to cry
in the future. This is because babies, who cry less, have more energy to devote
to getting well when they’re sick. Can you believe this? Australian
researchers, who carried out a three year study, said that newborns, who cry
less put on weight more rapidly and therefore are able to go home sooner if
they are hospitalised. So there you are, lullabies really are good for babies!

Pictures

Don’t forget that I’m looking for photographs of nice scenic views. If you’ve
got one of the region that you’d like us to show in the middle of Look North,
just before Paul comes on with the forecast, then send me the picture that
you’re particularly proud of. Either send me a hard copy in the post or if
you’ve got a digital camera, then send it to me electronically. And then, watch
out for it to be shown on the Big Screen half way through the programme.

Newquay

At Christmas time, I was lucky enough to go down to Cornwall for two or three
days to visit my family and on Christmas Eve I went down to a place called
Fistril Beach. It’s very trendy and fashionable at the moment with all the
surfers and you might have seen the pictures in the papers this week of an
absolutely enormous wave. Fistril Beach is well known for surfing, but this was
a wave forty foot high and travelling at 40mph! These were apparently the
biggest waves ever seen in Britain and people were out surfing in them and even
managed to survive. If you’ve seen the pictures, then you’ll know what I’m
talking about. But just imagine a wave forty foot high! It was caused by a rare
phenomenon known as the cribbar – a giant swell occurring just once or twice a
year and lasting no more than an hour or two. On Monday afternoon, only four
professional surfers braved the water as the colossal waves crashed in. It is
extraordinary. There’s a picture of a man absolutely dwarfed by!
the size of the waves. I don’t suppose we’ve got any surfers in our part of
the world, but there you are. But if you ever go to Cornwall, then I recommend
you go to Fistril Beach to watch the surfing. It’s quite something. Even in the
middle of winter, they were still surfing on Christmas Eve in the freezing
cold!

Levy Letter

Don’t forget that we’re trying to spread the word and increase the number of
Levy Letter subscribers even more. If you get somebody interested in the Levy
Letter, and they sign up, then do let me know and I’ll try and give you a
mention. Just direct them to one of the two addresses at the bottom of the page
and then click on Levy Letter and get them to follow the instructions through.
If they do it tonight or over this weekend, then they’ll get their first email
from me through either tomorrow or on Monday.

Well, that’s it from me for today. Have a very good afternoon and join me
tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care, thanks for reading

Peter
