Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm
for all the day’s news.

And also tonight, well we’ve all heard the excuse of the wrong type of snow and
the wrong type of leaves on the roads holding up the traffic, well I’ve got a
new one here for you. How about the wrong type of tarmac? Well, tune in tonight
to find out more on that one! Also, do you remember a few months ago, I was
talking to a man, who was so concerned about his weight, he was willing to risk
a dangerous operation to have his stomach stapled. Well, after months of
recuperation, he’ll be my guest tonight and will be revealing his new look!
It’s been a long journey for him, so I look forward to hearing how much weight
he’s now lost. Join me tonight for Look North on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

And remember last night, we were talking about the Mayor of Wetwang and the
vacancy which is there at the moment. The mayor has to be born and live in
Yorkshire. Dickie Bird and also Paul Hudson have been muted as possibles! We
had a text vote last night on the programme, after I spoke to Dickie Bird and
we had a huge number of texts in! But who do you think actually won? And what
do you think the results of the texting were? Well, join me tonight on BBC1 at
6.30pm for Look North to find out the answer to that one! Who could it possibly
be? And it’s not definitive I have to say. But who is going to be the new mayor
of Wetwang. They’re talking of very little else at the moment!

Levy Letter

And don’t forget that wherever you’re reading this Levy Letter, it’s always
good to hear from you. This one comes from Peter O’Neil. “Just to let you know
that I read your Letter out here every day in Equatorial Guinea. I am shore
based here on the gas plant 28 on and 28 off. When at home, I live in Hedon
with my wife, Caroline, and every evening we watched the programme. The scenery
here is amazing. The camp is at the mouth of a bay surrounded by forest. In the
distance are two volcanoes and apparently five years ago this area was a
jungle. There are certainly still snakes, lizards and spiders around. The
nearest town is Malabo. Anyway, I thought I would drop you a line. Take care!”
And that comes from Peter. Thank you very much indeed for that Peter. And good
afternoon to you in Equatorial Guinea!

Wherever you are, then let me know where you’re reading the Levy Letter,
especially if you’re outside of the region. We’ll see if anyone is reading
further away than Equatorial Guinea! I’m sure they’re not!

If there’s anyone you know, who you think might like to get a daily Levy Letter
to keep them in touch with home, then tell them to go to either one of the two
addresses at the bottom of the page and sign up. They’ll then get their first
daily Levy Letter from tomorrow.

Men Are Sickly

Well, they’re more prone to viruses and aren’t simply making a fuss about
nothing. Well, according to statistics that’s true. According to many
long-suffering wives and girlfriends, men make terrible patients. They
constantly complain and exaggerate making a simply case of the sniffles sound
like a terrible dose of the flu. We’ve all done it. I know I’ve done it! The
research has shown that such moaning may be justified, because men are more
susceptible to some illnesses than women. This is due to the fact that the male
and female immune systems are very different, with men more vulnerable to
catching viruses such as colds and flu. The researchers have carried out tests
on immune systems of male and female mice of various ages. So there you are. If
it’s true of mice, then I suppose it’s true of us?! I don’t know.

More Boys Than Girls

Staying on the subject of gender, more boys than girls are born in Britain each
year according to official figures. Nearly 368,000 boys were born in the UK in
one year, compared to 348,000 girls. However, overall there are still more
women than men in the UK. 30.6 million females, 29.3 million men. But the
chances of a girl being born are not as great as boys. More boys are born every
year than girls!

Diet

As you know, I am following this fairly dull existence at the moment on the
eating front. I’m trying to avoid white bread and pizzas and stuff like that.
I’m trying to eat more fruit and vegetables. I’m struggling along with it, and
think I’m doing ok. I was interested to read that sales of melons are soaring.
Melons were eaten 326 million times last year. That’s up 5% on the previous
year. The rise was particularly striking, because the total fruit consumption
actually fell slightly. But it seems we can’t get enough of melons at the
moment. The only reason that I always remember melon and know that I can eat
it, is because they say that you burn up more calories actually eating the
melon and picking up the knife and fork and chewing, than what is actually in
the melon. That said, I don’t think I’ve actually ever bought one from the
supermarket. The only times I’ve eaten it is when I’ve been in a restaurant. So
if you’re into following the healthy eating regime of Gillian Mc!
Keith, then do let me know. The night before last, on Tuesday night, I sat
down when I got in from work, and made myself my tea, I sat on my sofa, put my
tea on the tray to watch Gillian McKeith and what is she doing? – Yet again,
she had a lady on, giving her colonic irrigation!

Music To Drinkers’ Ears

Drinking like a fish could hold the key to a longer, healthier life. If you are
a drinker, then listen up, especially if you like red wines! Scientists were
able to extend the life of fish by 60% (can you believe that!?) by feeding them
in a compound of red wine. Before you raise a glass, a word of concern – humans
would have to down sixty-four litres of wine a day to get to similar doses of
the key ingredient. I hope Andy Comfort is reading this one!

Pictures

Don’t forget, that if you ever take a picture that you think we might be able
to use on the programme. It might be a comedy one, or a serious one, or if you
just witness something that you think we should know about and if you’re able
to email it in to me, that would be great. It’s the usual address to get hold
of me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or if you want to send a picture for the Big Screen,
a view of the area, then either send me a hard copy in the post to BBC Look
North, Queens Court, Queens Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH, or again email to the usual
address.

Congratulations

And finally, I just want to say congratulations to our Look North reporters, Jo
Makel and Linsey Smith and cameraman Joe Bilton, who won a major national
television award last night. They all went down to London for a glitzy award
ceremony, where they were presented with The Royal Television Society’s Award
for Best Regional News Coverage. So my congratulations to Jo, Linsey and Joe!

That’s all from me for today. Thanks very much for being there and for reading
the Letter. I hope you have a good day. Join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care

Peter
