Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm. I’ll
have all the day’s news and Paul will have the forecast.

And on the eve of the Laurence Olivier Awards, I’ll have more on the tremendous
success story of Liam Mower, the young boy from Hull, who is up for a top award
as the Best Actor in a musical. He’s up against Ewen MacGregor on Sunday
evening. We were of course talking to his very proud Mum on the programme last
night. I’ll have more about that on the programme at 6.30pm. And you can hear
coverage live from the awards on BBC Radio Humberside. If you’re not in the
Radio Humberside area, then of course you can always go to the website and
listen live on air.

Of course, also tonight, Paul will have the forecast as well – the potential
Mayor of Wetwang! Thanks to everyone, who texted in and voted for Paul. So the
results were 90% for Paul to Dickie’s 10%!

Also tonight, I’ll be looking at the issue close to many parents’ hearts. I
know they’ve been waiting for these very important decisions. Tonight, we’ll
find out which primary schools in Lincolnshire will close or merge and also
which have been saved. There have been campaigns by many of the affected
schools and by parents and tonight I’ll be talking to the woman, who’s made
these decisions about closing or merging these schools.

My special guests tonight are the former Blue Peter presenter, Mark Curry and
his dog, Charlie! You might not know, but this is the Chinese Year of the Dog
and the internationally renowned dog trainer, Jan Fennell, is calling for an
International Day of the Dog! I’ve talked to Jan before on the programme, and
she is amazing how she handles her dogs, who are all very well behaved! Well, I
hope Charlie is going to be just as well behaved! Jan will be talking to us to
tell us why she thinks man’s best friend deserves its own special day! I hope
you can join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

If you meet anyone, or are with anyone over the weekend, who’s not already
signed up to the Levy Letter and you think that they would like one, then point
them in the direction of one of the two addresses at the bottom of the page –
either bbc.co.uk/lincolnshire or bbc.co.uk/humber, click on Levy Letter, follow
the instructions through and then they will get their first email from me on
Monday.

Bottle That Precious Moment

Can you believe it? It sounds as sensible as trying to sell snow to the Eskimos
or sand to the Arabs, but a Yorkshire company really believes it can persuade
us to buy fresh air or to be more precise, bottled atmosphere. It’s selling a
device that enables people to be able to capture that unforgettable moment. So
that atmosphere of Auntie Flo’s eightieth birthday will live forever inside a
bottle. Can you believe this? The beginner’s guide to doing this – find a place
with plenty of atmosphere, pull the cord, activate the capture kit, position
the bottle at a forty-five degree angle, move the bottle in an oscillating
fashion, replace the stoppage device or cork, apply the security seal and then
personalise the bottle on the reverse. It’ll keep forever so that you can enjoy
the atmosphere of that special moment. You couldn’t make it up, could you? And
it’s not even April 1st! Anyway, these kits to bottle the atmosphere are on
their way, apparently!

Ties

Something close to my heart and this story has already had quite a lot of
coverage in the papers. Until today, it’s been fairly safe to assume that a
grubby tie was the sign of a slob and not an assassin. How wrong we were. A
liberally stained tie is not only the epitome of sloth, but it’s also a lethal
weapon too. It’s a germ warfare laboratory of terrifying capabilities. Wear a
dirty tie and become a killer was the suggestion yesterday from the British
Medical Association, which is urging doctors to abandon neckwear. The medical
body fears that grubby ties could contribute to the spread of fatal superbugs,
such as MRSA. The recommendation follows the investigation by the BMA’s Board
of Science into the dramatic rise of health care associated infections. Doctors
are being warned that deadly germs are nestling there in their ties. They say
that, “they recognise that people touch their ties and wear them for a long
time, but they have to recognise the potential dangers.” So s!
ays, Dr Vivian Nathanson, who’s the BMA’s head of Ethics and Science. So, next
time you go to your Doctor, the chances are that he won’t be wearing a tie!

Pictures

Don’t forget, keep your pictures and photographs coming in. I want to see
pictures for the Big Screen with nice views of the area. Or if there is
something that you’ve seen that you think would make a very good item for the
show, then do let me have them. Send them to me. They can of course be comedy
ones as well to use around Paul’s spot in the middle of the programme. Please
send them to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Suzi Quatro

Suzi is making a comeback. Of course in the seventies, she bashed out hits
regularly, but she’s still going strong. Now at fifty-five, she’s looking good
as well, and just as stunning as she was in the seventies. She’s now on the
comeback trail with a new album released next week. This comes at a time when
another seventies star, Leo Sayer, is right up there at the top of the charts
at the moment. But hot on the heels of that success, Suzi Quatro has got a new
album coming out. She had hits of course with Devil Gate Driver and Can the Can
in the seventies. And there’s also a new album from another seventies stalwart,
Neil Diamond, who’s also got a new album out at the moment. So there you are,
the seventies are still going strong!

Michelle Dewberry

I don’t know if you watched the Apprentice the other night, but one of the
candidates this year is Michelle Dewberry. Michelle is only about twenty-six
and is the youngest candidate in the Apprentice this year. She’s fighting for a
job for a £100,000 a year salary with Sir Alan Sugar. Well, she went to Sydney
Smith School in Hull, but there is a feeling that she’s trying to disguise her
Hull roots. She’s certainly trying to talk quite posh at the moment. We’d like
to try and get to the bottom of this. Did you know her or did you go to school
with Michelle Dewberry? If so, then I would be grateful for a line. Drop me an
email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mike Baldwin

I hadn’t realised that Johnny Briggs, who plays Mike Baldwin is actually
leaving Coronation Street. I must admit that just recently, I have felt a
little bit out of touch with the programme, but I have been reading about it in
the papers this week. Well I’d better not talk about it in the Letter, in case
you haven’t seen it about his final exit, but he’s actually leaving the
programme. I’m not sure either, maybe you can help me with this, but I’m not
sure if he decided to leave, because he can’t cope with the programme filming
schedule anymore after so many years, or if they’ve just decided to write his
character out. I know some people think that his flashy style from the
seventies and eighties is outdated now. And now even Sally Webster can afford
to send her daughter on a skiing trip, so Mike’s money doesn’t make him that
unusual anymore. Of course, we’ll always remember that clip. I can’t remember
which year it’s from now, but the famous clip where Mike Baldwin hit Ken B!
arlow. It’ll always be a classic. So Johnny Briggs is leaving the street. Will
it affect the programme or not? Let me know.

Well, that’s it from me for today. Have a very good day and join me tonight on
BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care, enjoy your weekend!

Peter
