Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Monday’s Levy Letter. I hope your weekend
was good. It’s the start of another week of Look North, so I hope you can join
me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm. I’ll have all the day’s news, plus a Leave it to
Levy tonight and Paul will have the forecast.

Also tonight, I’ll be talking to Liam Mower, the Hull boy, who’s starring in
Billy Elliot. He had some wonderful news at the weekend. He’s now become the
youngest person to ever win a Laurence Olivier award. He was up for Best Actor
in a Musical and was up against stars like Ewen MacGregor for his role in Guys
and Dolls. And he won! Wonderful news for Liam and his family. So
congratulations to them. I’ll be talking to Liam tonight.

I’ll also be talking to the producer of BBC3’s Ferocious Mr Fixit, who secretly
filmed in a well known car dealership in Scunthorpe. Lazy workers and bad
language are revealed! So I’m sure you’re not going to want to miss that.

Our Leave it to Levy tonight comes from a woman, who hasn’t been sent
electricity bills for three years! Can you believe that? She’s worried that she
may be stuck with a huge bill! I’m going to try and sort that out for her. And
also, as a new four star hotel opens up in Hull, I’ll be asking why we haven’t
got more facilities in Hull when we’re hoping to be graded amongst the top ten
cities. So all that, plus all the day’s news – I hope you can join me on BBC1.

Truancy

Truancy is a subject, which we’ve talked about on the programme a lot over the
last couple of years and I see, from a report out today, that more than half a
million primary school children played truant last year. These are primary
children!! And this is despite a billion pounds being spent on tackling poor
attendance. And the number of secondary school children taking time off has
risen by almost 250,000 in the past five years. The problem of truancy just
seems to continue. No doubt that’ll be one thing that we’ll be talking about on
the programme again sometime in the future.

Voices

It will come as little surprise to Barry White fans, that when women are in the
mood for passion, they like a man with a deep voice. The study has shown that
women find a slightly masculine voice irresistible at the time of the month
when they are at their most fertile. Outside this fertile phase, most are
likely to be attracted to a more feminine voice, probably because it signals a
caring man, who is more likely to commit to a long term relationship. The
findings could explain why some women’s affections flit between rugged men with
the gravely tones of men like George Clooney to clean living, high pitched
types such as James Blunt. However, highly attractive women prefer deeper
voiced men throughout their menstrual cycle according to this research. So
there you are. The ideal man speaks very deeply for one week in the month and
then for the other three weeks should talk like the high-pitched James Blunt.
As long as he’s not offended by that type voice. That’s according to!
research that is out by the University of St Andrews, who obviously have
nothing better to do.

Texts

Texting has become a craze and almost a mania in this country. Many mobile
phone users send so many text messages now that they suffer from repetitive
strain injury, according to a new survey. 10% of callers quizzed, admitted to
sending up to one hundred texts a day, causing injuries to joints, nerves,
wrists and thumbs, which can leave sufferers unable to work. The survey showed
that many people use their first finger and thumb to text and are suffering
from RSI! Many millions more are at risk from developing RSI, because texters
usually hold their mobile in their fingers and press the tiny letter keys with
their thumbs. Unlike a standard computer keyboard, this puts a lot of strain on
the thumb. So there you are. If you text a lot, you could get RSI. Be warned!

Skating

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been absolutely mesmerised by the skating on
the Dancing On Ice programme on the television these last few weeks and I
haven’t missed a second of it on Saturday night, which just goes to show what
an interesting and scintillating Saturday night I had! Sat there on my own,
watching Skating on Ice! I was interested to see that last week, Hull Ice Arena
had its busiest ever week. The ice rink at the Kingston Retail Park was sold
out completely on Wednesday and Thursday. Staff there are putting it down to
the popularity of the Dancing On Ice TV show and also the Winter Olympics. But
on Saturday night, I watched the finalists go through to the last programme in
the series next weekend. We had Stephan and his partner and also Gaynor Faye.
Gaynor is a Yorkshire lass of course and she just stormed away on Saturday
night. And also, there was forty-one year old Bonnie Langford, who is just
extraordinary. Bonnie is a lovely person in real life. I’ve int!
erviewed her several times, but she is so tiny and what a stunning figure
she’s got! She’s through as well to the final. Those three will go through to
the playoffs next Saturday night to find out who has won the title. I’ve always
been fascinated by the skating. Next Saturday, we’ll see, for the first time
ever since the big day of 1984, Torville and Dean doing their skating of Bolero
routine next Saturday night. But if you’ve got any skating stories, or indeed
if you want to talk about anything else, then drop me a line back a little
later today – [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And don’t forget, if you’ve got a problem or two, that you think we might be
able to help out with on Leave it to Levy, then give me the details and also a
contact telephone number as well. Also, if you’ve got any photos (we’ve got a
funny photo coming up on the programme tonight, which somebody sent in to me),
then drop me a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Save Our Miles

I haven’t even mentioned this in the Levy Letter yet, but already there are
emails coming in on the suggestion by Neil Kinnock that we should have
kilometre signs rather than mile signs on our roads. Well, lots of people are
not too happy about that suggestion. Of course, very many measurements have
been lost to metric and only a few have been kept. Some that have been kept,
well a pint of beer of course, an acre of land and a mile. Pounds and ounces,
now can be used to sell loose goods as long as they’re still displayed in
kilograms as well. Those that we’ve lost of course are a hundred weight and
ton, hands and gallon as well. Well, do you want miles to go? There is a sign
post down at Lands End, which points to John O’Groats at 874 miles or 1,407
kilometres. Or pointing to New York, which is 3,147 miles or 5,065 kilometres!
I think, though, that the one I’ve seen at Lands End is the only one which has
both measurements. Are you in favour of getting rid of our mile signs a!
nd going to kilometres? Let me know what you think. All comments gratefully
received.

Homework

If you’ve ever struggled to understand or help out with your child’s or
grandchild’s homework, then this is a comforting story for us all. David
Beckham, never one known for his dazzling intellect, has surprised even his
greatest critics by his latest confession that he can’t understand his six year
old son’s maths homework. The England captain made his remarks when he was
doing an interview. He admitted that when Brooklyn asked for help with a school
assignment recently, he was baffled and had to turn to his wife, Victoria for
assistance. He says, “Their homework is so hard these days, I sat down with
Brooklyn the other day and I was like, Victoria, maybe you should do the
homework tonight. It’s totally different to what I was teached!” That’s what he
said. Not me!

Well, that’s all from me this Monday lunchtime. And don’t forget, if there’s
someone you know, who would like a Levy Letter, but is not signed up at the
moment, then get them to go to one of the two addresses at the bottom of the
page, tell them to click on Levy Letter and sign up. And still, last week, even
more people have joined the Levy Letter over the last seven days. If you are a
new subscriber, then I appreciate that, so thank you very much indeed! Let me
know who you are and where you are and a little bit about yourself by dropping
me a line when you’ve got a quiet moment. Have a very good Monday afternoon and
join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

See you soon

Peter
