Hello it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy letter, I hope your day goes
well and that you’ll be able to join me tonight BBC1 at half past Six for all
the day’s news and stories and of course Paul will be there with the forecast.

On tonight’s programme we’ll be looking into flood warnings on the East Coast
as we’re expecting the highest tides in twenty years.

Also, as the Red Arrows, based of course in RAF Scampton, prepare for their
four thousandth display this weekend we’ll be speaking to a man who flew with
the original crew back in the sixties.

We’ll be visiting the Burghley horse trials again, and taking a look at an
unusual way to take to the air with two local men.
We’ll also be chilling out with some live Jazz at the cleethorpes Jazz
festival.

Events

Don’t forget if you’ve got something coming up in the near future for charity
or a good cause and you’d like a plug in the Levy Letter then drop me a line
and give me the details. Also, if you’ve got a problem or something for a
“Leave it to Levy” that you think I might be able to deal with then the address
is – [EMAIL PROTECTED] .co.uk.

Yesterday I was talking about slide rules in the Levy Letter, which sparked a
response from Joe Noble in Hull. He says…

“I’m of a similar age to you, well maybe a little bit older, and I can remember
slide rules and also found them confusing. I was doing night school to get
qualifications for my job as a draughtsman and we also had to use Log tables. I
used to slide the rule and then check my answer using Log tables. Well try to
explain this to young people today and you just get a blank look. I did a
degree as a mature student about 12 years ago and everything is so much easier
with calculators!”

So there you go, that’s the giant slide rules I used to use when I was at
school! Of course if you’re under a certain age you won’t know what I’m talking
about…

Smoking

I see that a free telephone hotline is to be set up to report those who break
the ban on smoking in public. Informers will be put in touch through to their
local council whose Enforcement Officers will be ready to launch surveillance
operations and swoop on offenders and dish out on the spot fines. Well Smoking
campaigners have called the move deeply distasteful. And warned that most would
find the thought of turning smokers over to the authorities very Un-British.
Those who flout the ban will face a £50 spot fine or a £200 court fine.
Don’t forget, if you have a view on smoking then get in touch as ever.

Entertainment

There’s been a wonderful series on the history of Light entertainment on BBC 2
on Saturday nights, it’s drawing to a close but what an excellent series it’s
been. Thanks for all the emails telling me about that. I also mentioned
yesterday that Extras was on the way back – I said I didn’t know it went away!
– well apparently it is next Thursday night with Ricky Gervais. And in the new
series, amongst the guest stars there are Richard and Judy, and also Keith
Chegwin.

Divorce

Divorce might not only break a woman’s heart, it might also give her heart
disease! Scientists have suggested that a failed marriage is a major a cause of
Cardio-Vascular disease in women. Men, in contrast, were found to escape from a
split with their health unscathed. The research was based on examinations of
the medical records of more than 9000 men and women between the ages of 51 and
61.
Women who had been divorced, widowed or remarried were more likely to
experience health problems than those who had stayed married. I suppose it’s
not any great surprise but women may have a greater risk of heart disease if
they’re divorced than if they’re not.

Parky

He’s a well known Yorkshireman of course. He was featured in the story of Light
Entertainment on Saturday nights as well. Michael Parkinson - the Barnsley born
and bred broadcaster and journalist - has been criticising young Charlotte
Church. As I mentioned at the start of the week, the first episode of
Charlotte’s new chat show was on television last Friday. Parkinson, who was
interviewing the biggest names in show business before Miss Church was even
thought about, criticised the way in which a lot of young female presenters are
given plum jobs on TV. His pleas for intelligent older women to be given prime
time shows last night has been seen as a thinly veiled attack on the Welsh
starlet. Michael Parkinson is 71, you can’t believe it can you? Well he
contrasted that with what happens in America where Barbara Walters is a top
chat show host there, and she’s 74! Oprah Winfrey is 52.
Charlotte Church’s first programme didn’t do too badly in the TV ratings but
not as good as they’d hoped. The second one, of course, is tonight on Channel 4.

Weekend

Well that’s it from me today, join me if you can tonight at 6.30 and have a
very good weekend. If you’re with anyone at the weekend who’s not signed up to
the Levy letter and you think they’d like one then point them in the direction
of one of the two addresses at the bottom of the page. Tell them to click on
that address, go to Levy Letter then follow the instructions. They’ll get their
first Levy Letter from me starting on Monday!

Have a good weekend, bye.

Peter
