Hello it’s Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and you’ll be able to join me tonight, BBC1 at 6.30pm. All the day’s
news including a report from Spalding where anger over the proposed closure of
a special school has reached boiling point. We’ll investigate why residents
and traders are at loggerheads in Driffield and we’ll have a competition to win
tickets to see the musical Starlight Express when it heads to our region from
London’s West End. Paul, as usual will have the forecast.

Last night we were talking to the singer Peter Grant, he’s 19, he’s from
Yorkshire and he’s a huge hit at the moment. Lots of emails coming in saying
could we have more of his music. There is obviously music out to buy but if you
want to go and see him he’s appearing at Hull New Theatre on Saturday and we
did have a competition last night. Who had a hit in the ‘60s with Joanna? He
sings that song all these years later. If you think you know just send an email
in to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Cyclists

Cyclists to be fined £2500 possibly if they don’t ring their bells. Can you
believe it? The government is drawing up legislation to ensure every bicycle is
fitted with a bell and cyclists use it to warn pedestrians who are about to
step off the pavement onto the road. Cycling groups have branded the idea as
pointless nanny state intervention by new Labour. The proposals may prove
popular with pedestrians who are becoming increasingly angry with cyclists who
jump red lights, weave in and out of the traffic and career along pavements.
Department of Transport officials are considering proposals to give on the spot
fines to riders without bells. Persistent offenders could face court imposed
penalties of up to £2500. Cyclists being fined for having no bell or not
ringing it. On a serious note in the past five years 12 pedestrians have died
after being hit by cyclists. Well the cyclists have been warned, they’re after
you.

Eating out

One of the luxuries we all enjoy is occasionally going out and having a meal,
maybe a posh restaurant, maybe a fish and chip supper or a Sunday pub lunch or
a takeaway. Well there are now, apparently, according to the papers, possibly
plans to tax that. It’s been dubbed the plate tax by critics and condemned by
several including the chef Anthony Worrall Thompson as outrageous while the
industry branded it “monstrous”. It seems Gordon Brown wants to make some extra
pennies out of our eating out. Somebody from local government, the Tories has
warned it would punish hard-working families who are simply trying to treat
themselves. Your views on that fact and indeed anything else welcome. Please
get in touch. We love to talk about food on the programme. A couple of stories
here which are in the news this week. Eating mandarins could help cut the risk
of developing liver cancer and other diseases according to research. The fruit
is the latest super food thought to offer medical b!
enefits. Two studies have found that eating mandarin oranges or drinking juice
with added carotenoids, the vitamin A compound which gives mandarins their
orange colour, cuts the risk of several conditions. So there we are, get eating
mandarins and the other thing we’re doing is eating a lot of fish.
Traditionally the most bought food at the supermarket was chicken but now sales
of fish have increased by 20% in the past year. It now out sells chicken at
several of the main supermarkets.

Pictures

Don’t forget if you have a photo you think we should see for the Big Screen
then send it to me. Get your pictures in and if you have a problem for Leave it
to Levy and you’d like us to tackle that, drop me a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Make up

Women spend more than two years of their lives applying and removing make up
according to a new survey. The average British woman dedicates a total of 603
days to applying mascara, blusher, lipstick, eye shadow and a further 170 days
to taking it off again. It costs her £22500 in cosmetics and skin care products
according to this poll. If you want to comment on that on indeed anything else
then please get in touch.

That’s it from me today, have a good afternoon, enjoy this weather and join me
tonight BBC1, 6.30pm.

Take care, bye for now, Peter.
