It’s Peter here and welcome to the final Levy Letter of the week. And we’re
finishing the week with an extremely busy programme.

Tonight, we'll have a special report on the Croatian criminal gangs, targeting
supermarket cash points in our region. We ran this story earlier in the week
after many people got in touch with us to say that they had had money removed
from their accounts after using certain cash points in our region. Humberside
Police told us that skimming devices and cameras had been set up at ATMs so
that fraudsters could then read card details. Well, tonight, we'll reveal what
you need to know so that you don’t get fleeced. That’s one not to miss tonight.

And they’re on the brink - we'll be speaking to the East Riding business, who
says they could lose up to a million pounds if the foot and mouth ban on
exports continues. I’m sure local producers and farmers will feel the affects
on this outbreak for many months to come. If you’re a farmer in our region and
are affected by this, then get in touch with me. I’d love to hear from you to
get your point of view on this latest disaster for the farming community. It’s
the usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also tonight, he started sowing the seeds of success when he was just two years
old. Now that he's eleven, a North East Lincolnshire lad has won an award for
his allotment. It’s a great story from an incredibly dedicated young gardener!

And football fever hits the region as the new season kicks off. We'll be
getting the low down on the expectations for our clubs from Sports Editor,
David Burns and BBC Radio Humberside commentator, Peter Swan. And Simon Clark
will be meeting Scunthorpe United fans keenly awaiting the new season. And
there’s time here to mention that if you’re a sports fan, then make sure you
watch Look North on Mondays. We’re welcoming Football Focus presenter, Damian
Johnson, to our team, who’ll be with us every Monday bringing you all the
action from our sports teams. So I hope you can join me on Monday for a new
look at sport in our region. And don’t forget, we don’t just want to follow our
big football or rugby teams in our region. We want to know about other sports
too. If your netball team or hockey team are doing well, then let us know. And
if you happen to participate in any other sport, then get in touch too. Let me
know what sport you’re into, but please don’t invite me to join in!

As always, here are the little plugs for events that are happening near you.
This weekend sees a very busy event for the Withernsea Lifeboat crew. Steve
Medcalf from the team got in touch with me. He says – “On Saturday from noon
until 4pm, we are opening the doors to our Lifeboat Station for all to come and
see. Come along and see where the Making Waves money has been utilised, meet
the crew and see our vital lifesaving equipment. There will be souvenirs on
sale as well as attractions for the children and admission is free” So that’s
the event on Saturday. And don’t forget, the Making Waves campaign was run by
BBC Radio Humberside and all the money was generated by their incredibly
generous listeners! So go and find out where all the money went to!

Steve also told me about another event this weekend on the Sunday. He writes –
“On Sunday, there is a free display on the Promenade at Withernsea involving
Withernsea RNLI, Humber RNLI and the Rescue Helicopter from RAF Leconfield. The
fun starts at 2pm and goes on throughout the afternoon, with the Helicopter due
at approx 3pm. It’s a very entertaining show for all to see and again no
admission charge!” So a weekend of events for the Withernsea Lifeboat crew.
They do incredible work, so I hope I’m able to help with a bit of publicity
here. Just to let you know that they are located at the top of Southcliff Road
in Withernsea and there’s lots going on this weekend, both on Saturday and
Sunday. Good luck to them!

And an event here in Grimsby for you. Sue from Grimsby Hospital got in touch
with me to let me know about a ‘Boneshaker’ Walk that they’re organising for
September. Now then I know it’s a long way off, but they want people to
register and to get a sponsor form. Her email says – “The Orthopaedic
outpatients unit at the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby is being
revamped, courtesy of the National Health Service, however the staff of the
Orthopaedic Unit are trying to raise some money to enhance the comfort of the
patients using this facility. We are organising a “ Boneshaker” Walk inviting
ex-patients and their friends and families to compete a sponsored circuit of
the St George V Stadium in Grimsby on Sunday 9 September starting at 11.00am.”
So there are the details for the walk. And Sue sends a final message to the
people of Grimsby! “Come and take part, or sponsor someone who is taking park,
or you’ll only have yourself to blame if you break a leg and the Outpatie!
nts Department is a boring place to be !!!” You have been warned. So hello to
Sue and all the nurses on Ward B7! If you’re unfortunate enough to break your
leg, then make sure you sponsor them! You can write to them to get a sponsor
form to Ward B7, the Orthopaedic Clinic, Diana Princess of Wales Hospital,
Scartho Road, Grimsby. So good luck to them.

Well, that's it from me for now. Just one final little story that I found in a
paper. You know how I like to read about the latest gadgets or scientific
breakthroughs! Well, scientists have done the most amazing thing now and have
learnt how to levitate things. It sounds like it’s out of Star Trek doesn’t it?
Now then, I don’t understand any of this, but this is how they did it. They say
that they’ve managed to reverse a natural force, which normally causes tiny
particles to stick together. This is called the ‘Casmir force’ or sticky
quantum force and is best illustrated in the way tiny geckos are able to stick
to a wall or ceiling with just one toe. Are you following all of this? Well, by
reversing this phenomenon, scientists cause objects to repel each other making
them sort of levitate. At the moment, they’re not saying they’ll be able to
make floating cars or even floating people, but said it would make huge
advances in technology like car airbags where friction is a com!
mon problem. So the uses of this amazing technique sound quite dull really
don’t they? But what do you reckon? This time next year, do you think I’ll be
announcing in the Levy Letter that scientists have found out how to levitate
humans?!?

Have a lovely weekend and look out for your Levy Letter again on Monday.

Peter
