Hi there and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. On tonight's programme, as a
major report is published into Hull's devastating floods, we'll have analysis
and reaction to the city's worst peace time disaster.

We'll be meeting the youngsters, who are making a name for themselves as they
star in a special play about William Wilberforce.

And Look North will be roaring into action as we have a special preview for
this bank holiday weekend's bike meeting at Cadwell Park. That’s all tonight on
BBC One at half past six. I hope you can join me then.

Well yesterday we were talking about how competent we may, or may not, be using
the Internet. And here we are, sixty-four year old Carol from Hull has got it
all down to a fine art! She writes – “I am a 64 year old lady who loves surfing
the net. As I have a daughter in Perth Australia, I am often surfing the net
for news items from over there. I also love to go on to online shops to buy
things. Recently I bought an Electric Shaver for my husband, which cost £70 in
the shops in the town. I got it for £42.95. How’s that!! I also buy insurance
on the net, for both my house and car. I have been on auction sites and put in
bids for some items and won the race for them. I use e-mail for keeping in
touch with my daughter and we are now talking about buying web cams each, but I
have yet to learn more about these and how they work. I buy books, CD's,
clothes and am now looking for some furniture for the bedroom. I keep in touch
with old friends from school via the social ne!
tworking sites. If I didn't go on my computer I don't know what I would do
instead. I use it to get away from having to watch all the football when it's
on. I love surfing the net.” So well done to Carol! And thanks for emailing
in.

Also in the Letter, I like giving plugs and congratulations to people in our
area for things they’ve done well in. I’ve been told about one very special
performer called Hannah Priestley from Louth. She’s been chosen to represent
the North Lincolnshire Music and Drama festival in Brigg for the regional
championships in Yorkshire on Saturday 8th September. Hannah is just seventeen
years old, but has been learning the violin since the age of four. She’s now
applying to Music College to further her musical education. So well done to
Hannah and I hope she does well in representing the North Lincolnshire festival
in the regional championships in September.

A couple more plugs now. If anyone’s driven over the Humber Bridge in the last
couple of days, then they will have seen the marquees going up and the big
stage just outside Barton. Well this is for Humberfest – that’s the big music
festival that previously had to be postponed because of flooding in the area,
but is now going ahead this weekend. It starts tonight with Deacon Blue and The
Commitments performing. Then tomorrow it’s the wonderful Jane McDonald, Sunday
sees many local bands and groups performing and because it’s the bank holiday
weekend, the music continues with ABC, Go West and Tony Hadley. So if you’re
going to that, then enjoy!

And Burstwick are having a Fun Day on Monday too. One of the organisers, Andy
has written in – “As you are aware, many places in England have been flooded
through torrential rain these last few months. We are a small community just
outside of Hull called Burstwick which has been devastated by the floods. A
majority of the houses were under water. Some of them are not even covered by
flood insurance or the cover has just expired which leaves them helpless.
Because of this we have set up a committee and from that are going to have fund
raising events to help those who need it and to help the community as a whole
after such an event has occurred.” So there’s lots going on in Burstwick on
Monday, including lots of things for children and live music and a hogroast.
There’s also a static bike ride! Teams from the Humberside Fire and Rescue and
Humberside Police are having a go. And our foolish or intrepid reporters, Phil
Norton and Matt Richards are taking part too. So if you’re a!
bout in Burstwick on Monday, then pop down to the Hare and Hounds pub after
6pm and give some encouragement to all the people on bikes! I think they’ll
need it! Good luck to everyone involved.

Well, that’s it from me. Have a lovely bank holiday weekend.

Take care,

Peter
