Hello and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day’s going well and
you’ll be able to join me for tonight’s Look North at half past six on BBC One
as usual.
On the programme today we’ll be looking at the case of three Lincolnshire
pensioners who died after contracting hospital infections. We report from Louth
as coroner Stuart Fisher delivers his recommendations to local hospitals.

We'll be speaking to the woman who insured her home just minutes before the
flood waters rushed in. Now she says Norwich Union won't pay her for her claim.
It’s an amazing story, and I wonder if other people are in the same situation.
We’ll have all the details.

And we'll meet the pigeon fancier getting ready for one of the country's big
races, it has a £20,000 prize!

And of course we’ll have the detailed weather forecast for our region, will it
be another damp week or will we get some sun? Find out the latest predictions
later on the programme.

University Courses

I saw this on the BBC News website today today, it’s a controversial subject,
see what you think of this one. A group campaigning for lower taxes has
launched an attack on university courses that they say are a waste of money. So
what are these “Mickey Mouse” courses? Well lots of people go to university
these days don’t they, it seems to be the thing to do and employers often ask
for university qualifications before considering candidates, but would they be
so impressed if you’d just finished a degree in Outdoor Adventure with
Philosophy?
A report released by the campaigners identified 401 courses which it says were
not suitable to be taught in universities. In addition to the one I just
mentioned - I can’t imagine what that must involve - they also picked on
courses like Golf Management, Fashion Buying, Baking Technology, and Equestrian
Psychology. That sounds like an interesting one, apparently it investigates the
“unique partnership between horse and rider during husbandry, training and
competition". The report claims the tax payer paid £40.4 million to subsidise
students taking those courses last year. That is a lot of money, isn’t it?
Well the universities have fought back, saying that these courses are directly
linked to employers’ demands, and that they will lead to good job prospects as
they deal with specific skills. They might have a point, and most of those
mentioned seem to be job focussed in some way. I’m not sure what kind of
employer would request a qualification in Outdoor Adventure with Philosophy,
but it would probably be an interesting job. I wonder if there’s a
qualification in news reading?

If you have anything to say on this, let me know. Maybe you studied something
unusual and it was the best thing you ever did, or maybe it turned out to be a
waste of time. Drop me a line at my email address, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also if
you have any stories or information you want us to know about, or a picture you
think we could use on the programme, send it to me at the same address.

Concert

I’ve got a plug here for a special concert in aid of Macmillan Cancer. The
concert “Viva Voce” draws on the combined talents of postgraduates of the Royal
Northern College of Music and The Beverley Chamber Choir and will take place in
St Mary’s Church Beverley on September 8th 2007 at 7.30pm. They promise a
delightful and relaxing programme which will certainly entertain the audience.
There are a lot of very talented musicians performing, and if that sounds like
your cup of tea then tickets are on sale from the Beverley Tourist Information
Office, the telephone number’s 01482 391672 and they’re priced at £10. That
sounds like a lovely evening and of course it’s all in aid of a good cause.

Don’t forget, if you can’t watch Look North live, if you’re busy or getting
home late, you can watch the programme online at our website
www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull. You can also download the main stories of the day
to watch separately as well. And if you know somebody who’s not signed up to
the Levy Letter that’s the web address to send them to so they can subscribe.
That’s it from me for today, join me tonight for Look North at half past six on
BBC One. Have a good day, bye for now.

Peter
