Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day’s
going well and you’ll be able to join me tonight for Look North at half past
six. First it was the floods, and now Foot and Mouth. We'll be looking at how
the Foot and Mouth crisis in the South of England is affecting farmers and meat
processors in our region.

Campaigners against plans for a leisure centre in Louth find out they will be
able to put their case to a public enquiry.

We're at Leconfield as the Armed Forces Minister visits the School of Transport
and the RAF.

And we pay a visit to the country's first eco-friendly holiday cabin made from
straw, but there isn’t much old fashioned about this wind and solar powered
structure.

And Hannah Moffat will be meeting the senior citizen taking up Britain's
fastest growing sport – Triathlon. I think that’s swimming, running, and
cycling, or three events too many for me…

And we’ll have the forecast as always. It’s still looking good for most of our
region, but will it last? Find out later on the programme. That’s Look North at
six thirty on BBC One.

Wetwang

Well as I mentioned on the show yesterday, apparently Wetwang is the only real
place name in the Lord of the Rings books. I was informed of that fact in an
email from a helpful viewer, it wasn’t something I was personally aware of I
have to admit. Surprisingly, the Mayor of Wetwang, our own Paul Hudson, seemed
to be oblivious to that fascinating information, shame on him. I’m told that in
the famous Tolkien books Wetwang is an area of swamp near to the Dead Marshes –
no jokes about the real Wetwang please. So now you know.

Aviation Show

If you’re a fan of planes or aviation then you’ll want to know about an event
on Monday August 27th, Bank Holiday. It’s a special day being held by the
Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre in East Kirkby. It’ll be attended by
Marshal of The Royal Airforce Sir Michael Beetham and Air Chief Marshal Sir
John Willis. There will be a flying display, weather permitting, with some rare
aircraft doing flybys, and there will also be a photographic display as well.
That’s at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, East Kirkby, Spilsby
Lincolnshire starting from 10.30am.

Real Ale

Now I don’t know how many real ale fans read the Levy Letter, but apparently if
you are, you’re very unlikely to be female. I don’t think that’s a huge
surprise to be honest, but there’s a new campaign to get brewers to target
women in their advertising and encourage female drinkers to take up the
traditional beverage. According to the Campaign for Real Ale, or CAMRA, 80% of
female drinkers have never tried a pint of bitter in a pub, as I said, I don’t
think this is an earth shattering revelation.
CAMRA’s first ever chairwoman has said that beer marketing is patronising
because it doesn’t often feature women drinking the products. So if you’re a
woman and you like a drink from time to time, would you be tempted to try a
pint of bitter rather than a more feminine tipple? I’m not sure about that
myself, and you have to question whether it’s a good thing encouraging anyone
to take up drinking pints of a heavy alcoholic beverage. Maybe I’m wrong.
If you want to have a comment on this or anything else, or maybe you have a
news story for Look North or you want to send us a picture for the programme,
you can drop me a line on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And if you know somebody who’s not signed up to the Levy Letter and you think
they’d like one, get them to go to www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull and click on
Levy Letter and they can sign up and start receiving their free daily Levy
Letter from the very next day.

Well that’s about it from me today, join me tonight for Look North at half past
six on BBC One.

Bye for now

Peter
