Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day’s
going well and you’ll be able to join me tonight on Look North at half past
six. We’ll have all the day’s news and stories from our region. Tonight we have
news that hundreds of jobs are going to be lost at Dixon car dealerships across
Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. We'll have the latest.

Little Zoe Chambers, the toddler who had a heart transplant has spent her first
night back at home in Hull and we'll have a full interview with her Mum. Don’t
miss that, it’s been such an incredible story of survival.

We'll have the story of the convicted criminal who's being let out of prison to
play for Boston United.

In the build up to their crunch relegation match against Salford we'll be
hearing from Hull Kingston Rovers as they battle to stay in Super League.

And the Antiques Roadshow’s in town... we'll see what treasures people have
been hoarding in their attics. Of course we’ll have the weather forecast as
well, it’s been fabulous weather around here, and we’ll find out what’s on the
way. That’s Look North today, 6.30 on BBC One.

We had a story yesterday on the programme about young actors from Hull finding
their accent a barrier to success on the stage, well that got a big response,
I’ve had a few messages like this one from Simon in Driffield,

“I’m Yorkshire born-and-bred, and, wherever I go, my Yorkshire accent goes with
me. If other people don’t like it, that s their problem!”

I saw another message mentioning that Hull has managed to produce actors like
Maureen Lipman, Barrie Rutter, Ian Carmichael, and or course Tom Courtenay too.
Quite right. And there was this one from Steve in Hull,

“My son just auditioned for a film from the makers of Harry Potter, and they
wanted a Hull accent!”

So there you are, a Hull accent can give you a career boost as well! We also
had one or two messages saying – can you believe it – that people from Hull
should learn to talk properly and stop moaning! If you’ve got anything to say
about that you can email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], also if you’ve got any
pictures you want us to see at Look North, or if you’ve got a story you want to
tell us about or something you want to say about the Levy Letter, that’s the
address to reach me.

Brits Abroad

Well it might – or might not be – a surprise to learn that Britons holidaying
abroad need a “disproportionate” degree of assistance from British consulates
while they’re spending time on Stag and Hen nights, or just enjoying a foreign
break.
A report from the government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office picked out
Prague in the Czech Republic as a particular trouble hotspot. It’s a very
fashionable place to go for Stag and Hen nights these days, and apparently it’s
one of the top spots for Britons to lose their passports, get arrested, or get
taken to hospital.
More British tourists are taken to hospital in the Czech Republic than in
Germany, which receives more than three times the number of Britons. That’s an
incredible statistic, isn’t it? More people also lose their passports in the
Czech Republic than Greece, which again has three times the number of British
tourists. It does make you wonder what people are getting up to there.
Apparently the top country for Britons encountering problems was Spain, which
is also the most popular holiday destination. France, the second most popular
destination, had one of the lowest rates of passport problems reported. It’s
fascinating how we behave in different countries isn’t it? Or maybe it’s just
that different people go to different places on holiday, hence the different
rates of problems. On that basis I’d say France is probably a safer bet for a
Stag trip than Prague.

Don’t forget if you know somebody who’s not subscribed to the Levy Letter, send
them to our Look North website address at www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull. They can
click on Levy Letter and sign up for their free email which they should receive
from the very next weekday afternoon.

That’s about it from today’s letter. Don’t forget to watch Look North tonight
at 6.30 on BBC One, and of course we’ve got news bulletins at 1.30 in the
afternoon, and 10.25 in the evening, so there’s no excuse for missing your
regional news from the BBC.
I hope you can join me later. Bye for now

Peter
