Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your
day’s going well and you’ll be able to join me tonight on Look North at half
past six on BBC One. We’ll have all the day’s news and stories from our region
as always.

Coming up tonight, the effect of the recent floods goes on. Now private tenants
worry that they're losing their homes, we'll find out why on the programme.

Hull fails again in the latest education statistics. We'll have a report on
this latest blow for the city.

We’ll have the row over a new one hundred million pound housing development in
Scunthorpe being built on a flood plain. Of course locations for new
developments are very much in people’s minds after the flooding.

We have the story of the Grimsby engineer who liked an aeroplane in Dubai so
much, he rebuilt it and flew it home. It’s an extraordinary story, don’t miss
that.

And we'll reveal the worst football shirt ever, as voted for by supporters
across the country. I’ll give you a clue, the “winner” is close to home…

And of course Paul will be here with the weather forecast today. Don’t shoot
the messenger! It’s not looking good outside the window at the moment. We’ll
have the latest predictions on the programme.

Railway

Well we had a few emails and messages about this, apparently we were very
controversial on the programme last night. Take a look at this email sent to us
from Mr Longly,

“Last nights piece about Lincoln RAILWAY STATION, annoyed me intensely, there
is no such thing as a Train Station, it is a Railway STATION, It is linked to
another station by a steel rail and so on round the system, in other words the
train is fixed to the steel rail, unlike a bus which can go anywhere to another
bus station. This description that you used is Banned by the railway press and
wont be printed in THE RAILWAY MAGAZINE or other technical publications.”

Well I have to admit, that’s news to me. I don’t know if he’s right, but as I
said we had a few messages saying the same thing. It’s obviously annoyed a few
people a great deal, of course we used the phrase “train station”, which I now
know is banned by the Railway Press. If you’ve got any proof of this, anything
you can quote definitively then send it in. I don’t know how many train
spotters or railway fans we’ve got reading the letter, but as always if you’ve
got anything to mention, or anything you want to bring to my attention, or a
picture or story you think we can use for the programme then send it to me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Rich List

I see one of the newspapers has recently published its annual Rich List, that’s
the list of the richest people in the Britain and Ireland, Europe, and the
world. Not all of the names on it are household names I have to say. Lakshmi
Mittal is the richest man in Britain and Ireland, with his steel business. He’s
worth over an incredible £19 billion. That’s 19 thousand million pounds, and
the second on the list is Roman Abramovich. You might have heard of him, he’s
the owner of Chelsea Football Club apparently. Looking down the list, the next
well known person is Sir Richard Branson at 11th, worth just over £3 billion.
The rest of the names on the list are largely people you won’t have heard of.
Perhaps more interesting is how the list breaks down. There are 1,028 men
featured in the list, and just 92 women. Another interesting statistic is that
of the top 1,000 entries, 774 of those are self made.
The top industries for making a fortune are land and property at number one,
finance is second, and heavy industry is third in the list. So if you’re a
future tycoon you might want to head to one of those industries to make your
millions, or in this case billions.
They are incredible amounts of money aren’t they? It’s difficult to imagine
what those numbers mean, let alone having that much in the bank. And in case
you were wondering what the most successful star sign was… and even if you
weren’t wondering I’m going to tell you anyway, it’s Taurus. Second was Gemini,
and the third most popular in the list was Capricorn. So now you know.

If you know somebody who’s not signed up to the Levy Letter and you think
they’d like one, get them to go to www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull and click on
Levy Letter and they can sign up and start receiving their free daily Levy
Letter from the very next day. Of course at that web page you can also watch
the most recent Look North programme if you can’t watch it live, and you can
watch some of the top individual stories as well, so if you haven’t started
using it yet, try it out today.

That’s about it from me, remember to join me tonight at half past six on BBC
One.

Bye for now

Peter
