Hello and welcome to today’s Levy Letter. You may have been experiencing some
snow today as it looks like this year’s going to start with a cold snap, and if
you’re out on the roads in this weather I’m sure you’ll be very aware of the
need for safe driving. We had a huge response after the programme yesterday
when we were talking about accidents on the roads, of course lots of people
have strong opinions on that and we had many interesting ideas and views. Thank
you for all those, I’ve been looking through them, and don’t forget if you want
your comment read out during the programme then call our hotline, text in, or
email us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] As I’ve mentioned before, your comments and
stories help us enormously on the programme and we look at them all.

Coming up on Look North today, we'll hear from an army expert about the
hazardous task of safely detonating a world war two bomb in Howden after it was
discovered by an enthusiast with a metal detector.

We'll hear from the Goole campaigner claiming plans to downgrade local fire
stations is putting lives at risk.

We speak to the Lincolnshire businessman planning to get us out of our cars and
into a hovercraft as our main means of transport this year. We’ll see how that
goes…

There’s a Look North report on plans by Hull City Council to encourage us to
recycle more household waste. I’m sure there’s a lot of waste around after
Christmas, as there always is.

We'll hear from the Grantham man setting his sights on the North Pole as part
of a new challenge.

And also on Look North tonight, the teen skating sensation hoping to make a
name for herself in 2008.
That’s all coming up at the usual time of half past six on BBC One, and we’ll
also have the latest weather forecast from Paul. Will there be more snow on the
way, or will it be warming up? I hope you’ll join me tonight to find out.

Diet

Well it’s the word that’s probably on the lips of thousands of people at this
time of year as we recover from festive eating and drinking, and a new
government report claims that an amazing 70,000 deaths could be prevented in
the UK each year by improving our diet.
The average adult eats too much salt, saturated fat, and sugar, and not enough
fruit, vegetables, oily fish, and wholegrains. Does anybody else feel a new
year’s resolution coming on? Incredibly, the number of people that could be
saved each year by these diet changes amounts to 10% of the UK’s mortality rate.
Increasing our intake of vegetables and fruit alone could save 42,200 lives a
year. We’ve all heard of the “five a day” slogan, but I didn’t realise it would
make such an impact. Reducing salt intake from the average of 9g a day to 6g
could save 20,200 lives.
So you know what to do now to lead a healthy and extended life, until next
Christmas comes around that is…

Having a laugh

I hope you enjoyed a Christmas and new year filled with fun and laughter, and
research now claims that we humans might not have the monopoly on laughter, and
we might have inherited the ability from an ancient ape relative. Animals are
often said to express happiness, but some of the first scientific evidence of
laughter-like behaviour in creatures other than humans has been discovered by
scientists studying orang-utans.
The apes mimic an open mouthed expression resembling laughter when it’s seen in
other orang-utans, and the speed with which it was mimicked in play and
interaction suggests that the expression is involuntary, much like genuine
laughter in humans. The behaviour is thought to display the empathy and mimicry
which forms a key part of laughter and other fundamental human interaction.
It’s strange to think that animals can laugh and express emotion in some of the
same ways we do. I suppose it shows we’re not as removed from apes as we like
to think. I’m sure they have a healthier diet than most of us anyway, certainly
a few less mince pies over the last month.

Well that’s it from me for today. I hope you can join me for Look North today
at the usual time of half past six on BBC One. Don’t forget we’re always
looking for interesting pictures for the programme. If you’ve got a good one
and you think we might like to show it before the weather then send it in to me
either in a hard copy or by email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Let me know if you’ve
got anything to say in the letter or if you want a quick plug for an event as
well, or if you’ve got a story you think we should know about.
Have a good day, and I’ll be back with the Levy Letter tomorrow.

Bye for now

Peter
