Good afternoon, it’s Peter here! Tonight on the programme, we'll have the news
that thousands of people have been left out of pocket after a computer fault
with Hull City Council took, in some cases, hundreds of pounds in error from
bank accounts. We’ll have the full story tonight. Plus the all important
information on how to get the money refunded.

Also tonight, should the veterans of Bomber Command receive campaign medals?
I'll be chatting with the Grimsby MP, who thinks they should and is campaigning
on their behalf.

As Lincolnshire's hospitals remain on red alert, we'll get the latest on how
the county is trying to cope with the massive number of emergency cases
referred to our hospitals.

And also tonight, for six years, children in Lincolnshire have benefited from
the musical expertise of the London Mozart Players, but due to changes in the
Arts Council Funding, this could mean the end. We'll get the full story on this.

Plus Look north will be at the London Boat show today, where the Hull and
Humber clipper crew will be recruiting for their 2009 race team. That’s all on
BBC One at half past six. I hope you can join me then.

Chewing

It seems that so many children nowadays have their mouths munching constantly
throughout the day on chewing gum. Do you approve? I’m sure there are some
parents reading the Levy Letter, who don’t. And of course, the remnants of
chewing gum regularly end up being chucked on pavements and then getting stuck
to your shoe. Well, here’s a warning as well from doctors, who say that too
much “sugar-free” chewing gum can lead to severe weight loss and diarrhoea. Now
then, I’ve heard of this. The cause is down to ‘sorbitol’. That’s a widely used
sweetener that’s often in the ingredients of mints or sweets or snack bars. And
‘sorbitol’ can act as a laxative. So be careful how much chewing gum you munch
on!

Veni, Vidi, Vici

A highbrow subject now for the Levy Letter! Statistics are now showing that the
number of state secondary schools teaching the Latin language has doubled over
the last seven years! However, worries are that these figures reflect only the
younger generations of pupils learning Latin and that not enough students are
taking their Latin language learning through to GCSE or A Level or beyond.
Concerns are that Latin teaching could vanish within a generation if those
students don’t continue to improve their Latin skills. So can you remember
learning Latin at school? I certainly didn’t. But there’s a big shortage of
Latin teachers at the moment. Only two centres in the whole of the UK run the
teacher training course for Latin and that, hardly surprisingly, is at
Cambridge University and King’s College London. Just to put that into context,
only thirty teacher training Latin places have been allocated this year, while
seventy-two teachers are due to retire every year for the next fi!
ve years. So will it soon really become a dead language!

Unwanted Christmas Gifts

This story sounds horrible to me. Surely no matter how inappropriate a
Christmas present is from someone, then you shouldn’t sell it on – should you?
Well, manners are being cast aside and many people, who have been particularly
disappointed with their Christmas presents, are now putting them on internet
auction sites to sell. And bizarrely, some of these gifts haven’t even been
unwrapped! Someone had put up on the Internet a gift from her father saying, “I
have had a lot of presents this year and would much rather have the cash.”
Unbelievable! I hope he doesn’t find out! Another inappropriate gift for
someone that was being sold on over the Internet was a helicopter flying trip
and he was selling it because he doesn’t like flying. Can you imagine his face
when he unwrapped that! I hope he’s a good actor when he said thank you very
much for my present! So all that thought gone into choosing and buying
Christmas presents apparently isn’t appreciated by some people! They’d muc!
 h rather have the cash!

That’s all from me. I hope you can join me for Friday night’s Look North. Have
a lovely weekend.

Peter
