Hello and welcome to today’s Levy Letter for Friday. I hope the week’s gone
well for you, it’s almost another one over with. It’s been a busy week on Look
North with lots of stories that have really got people emailing and calling in.
Hopefully next week will be the same, and of course if you want to email in a
comment or an idea for a story you can always reach us on [EMAIL PROTECTED] We
read them all and we’re always looking for fresh stories from you, so get
writing in.

Coming up on Look North today, as controlled explosions continue to rock the
village of Faldingworth near Market Rasen, we'll hear concerns voiced at a
public meeting.

As environmental officials are given stab vests at work, we'll be asking why
ambulance staff in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire are not being given protective
clothing.

As the Post Office announces more closures across East Yorkshire, we report on
the impact for village life, and we'll speak to the Post Office to find out
more about closure programmes in our area.

We’ll be reflecting on how country life has changed since the hunting ban, and
talk to a woman who spent 70 years of her life playing an active role in
hunting.

Also coming up tonight, as Hull City stand on the brink of the play off places,
we'll be talking to the Tigers' chairman Paul Duffen ahead of the weekend clash
with Blackpool.
We’ll also be taking a look at the start of Hull FC's Super League season.

And as always there’s the detailed weather forecast. I hope you can join me for
all of that on Look North at half past six on BBC One.

Knee Dynamo

As you know, I like to try and keep an eye on the ever changing world of
technology, and the new developments are flying thick and fast as usual. The
latest thing to catch the eye is a way to harness the energy created by human
movement, and use it to charge devices like mobile phones.
The prototype device is strapped onto the knee joint, and generates electricity
as you walk. It’s thought the invention could help those with prosthetic limbs,
and also offer an environmentally friendly source of power.
At the moment, the knee brace is efficient enough to charge a mobile phone for
30 minutes from just one minute’s walking. That sounds quite good. The
principle of human generated energy is also behind such devices as wind up
radios and self winding watches. I’ve seen those in the shops, but I don’t
think I’ve seen a generator knee brace yet.
Of course the funny thing is that you see these unusual inventions in the
papers and in the news, but how many of them actually become part of our lives?
We’ll have to wait and see, and maybe we’ll all be wearing them in a few years
time. Not much use when a lot of my time is spent sitting down though is it?
If you see me presenting Look North one day and I’m jogging on the spot while
reading the news then I might just be powering the studio lights. I hope that’s
a joke…

Exercise

According to a new study of 200 English GPs, doctors are increasingly
prescribing exercise as a cure for depression. It’s interesting because I’ve
read a few times that exercise is known to improve your mood, and if doctors
are relying on it more then there must be something in it.
A survey found that 22% of doctors prescribed exercise to people with mild
forms of depression, which is an increase from the 5% of just three years ago.
It says here that exercise can help people with mild forms of depression by
improving self-esteem - through better body image or achieving goals, and by
relieving feelings of isolation which can fuel their depression. It also
releases feel-good brain chemicals such as endorphins.
GPs are increasingly referring patients to schemes where they get a personal
trainer to devise an exercise programme for them. Unfortunately it’s only
available in a few parts of the country and we’re not one of them yet, but it’s
a fascinating idea. So if you often feel a bit down, getting fit might be one
way you can give yourself a lift, and you’ll be physically healthier as a
result.

Well that’s about it from me for this week on the Levy Letter. I hope you’ve
enjoyed reading them and I’ll be back again on Monday with more. Don’t forget
to join me for all the day’s news and stories from our part of the world in
tonight’s Look North. And have a very good weekend. If you have any stories to
tell me about over the weekend, or an interesting picture to show before the
weather you know what to do, drop me a line at my personal email address [EMAIL
PROTECTED] and I’ll receive it directly.
Enjoy your weekend, see you at half past six on BBC One.
Bye for now
Peter
