Hello and welcome to today’s Levy Letter. I hope you’re having a very good day
and the grey weather isn’t getting you down. We thought Spring had sprung, but
it looks like Winter isn’t done with us quite yet! We’ll have the detailed
forecast later on the programme as usual of course, don’t miss that. And it’s
also Valentine’s Day day today. If you’ve got something romantic planned with a
loved one or perhaps somebody you hope will become a loved one, I hope it goes
very well indeed.

Coming up on Look North, a man appeared in court today accused of murdering
Hull teenager Joe Dinsdale. Our reporter was in court for the hearing.

The manger of Lincoln city football club, Peter Jackson, has revealed he's
suffering from throat cancer. We'll find out what it means for him and the Imps.

We’ll be looking at claims that it's going to get even more difficult to find
an NHS dentist in Lincolnshire. The British Dental Association says that forty
per cent of dentists have left the NHS in the last 2 years.

Also tonight, we ask is it time to get rid of the statues of famous Victorians
who have long since been forgotten? As council taxpayers we have to pay for
the upkeep of these monuments.

And as I mentioned already, it's Valentine's Day. We'll meet the couple from
Surrey who've been spending a romantic Valentine's in Hull. I’m looking forward
to seeing what they get up to, and if you live in the Hull area it’s maybe not
too late to get some tips!

That’s all coming up on Look North tonight at half past six on BBC One.

Air Car

I saw this in the news yesterday and it’s another exciting development in the
world of technology. A French inventor has developed a car that he claims can
run purely on compressed air, producing no emissions at all while it’s driving.
In three minutes, the car can be filled up with air from compressors, and the
designers say that on long journeys the car will do the equivalent of 120 mpg.
With petrol prices the way they are, that sounds phenomenal, doesn’t it?
Sceptics of the project point out that the car will come without many of the
luxury fittings we expect from modern vehicles, prioritising light weight
instead. I’ll be interested to see how well this project does, it’s the kind of
thing you hope will do well, but I wonder how the big car manufacturers will
react to it. We’ll have to wait and see.

Gambling Man

I’m not a gambling man myself, but I do know many people enjoy a flutter from
time to time. I will however go out on a limb and say I don’t think many people
have ever lost £2.1 million, or £347,000 on a single bet!
That’s exactly what a 28 year old man did in a whirlwind few years after he
began gambling in just 2005. The twist in this rather sad tale is that the man
is now suing the bookies who allowed him to make such huge bets after he claims
he asked them to stop him gambling.
The man claims he set up an agreement with the bookmakers called self-exclusion
which is a way for compulsive gamblers to protect themselves if they think they
can’t control their urges. However, he was still able to reopen his account
shortly after and resume gambling without any obstacles.
The bookmakers are saying the responsibility lies with the person placing the
bet, as they do so of their own free will. The case will go to the High Court
next week.

Neighbourhood watch

Just before I got I’ve got a mention here for a meeting to be held at Wake
House in Bourne on Monday at 7.30 pm. The meeting’s open to anyone in the
Bourne area who has an interest in Neighbourhood Watch or in local policing
matters in general. Deputy Chief Constable for Lincolnshire, Richard Crompton
will be attending, and I’m informed he will be addressing some of the concerns
regarding local policing. So if you live in or near Bourne, or if you’re in
Lincolnshire and are interested in that it’s on Monday at 7.30pm.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got a story or a picture for the programme, or if you
want to let me know personally about anything for the letter or to send me your
comments, you can drop me a line at [EMAIL PROTECTED] That will go directly to
me and I look forward to reading your comments.

Well that’s it from me for today, I hope you have a very good afternoon and I
hope you can join me tonight at half past six on BBC One for Look North.

Bye for now

Peter
