Hello there. It’s Peter here. Isn’t the weather horrible this morning? I do
hope you managed to stay dry and umbrellas didn’t end up inside out! Let’s hope
Paul has some good news for us later.

National Television Awards

The stars of television land were out last night to see who would win the
awards as voted for by the public. The ceremony was presented by Sir Trevor
McDonald and in case you missed it, here are the details of the winners. First
award of the night went to the ‘Paul O’Grady Show’ as winner of the Most
Popular Entertainment Show. Outstanding Serial Drama Performance went to Matt
Littler who plays Max in ‘Hollyoaks’. Picking up the prize for Most Popular
Factual Programme was The Stig for ‘Top Gear’. Most Popular Comedy Programme
went to ‘Benidorm’. ‘Eastenders’ won their first gong of the night as Rita
Simons who play’s Roxy won Most Popular Newcomer. ‘Doctor Who’ won Most Popular
Drama. Ant and Dec held onto their Most Popular Entertainment Presenter crown.
David Tennant was up against his co-star Catherine Tate for Outstanding Drama
Performance but it was David who won the gong. ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ came
first in the Most Popular Talent Show category, and big award of ni!
ght, Most Popular Serial Drama, went to ‘Eastenders’. Simon Cowell took away
the Special Recognition Award.

Doctor Who?

One surprise of the night came from David Tennant, who announced he will no
longer be playing the Doctor. As he collected his award for Outstanding Drama
Performance , he said "When Doctor Who returns in 2010 it won't be with me." He
will appear in this year’s Christmas special entitled ‘The Next Doctor’ and
will film four more special episodes in January. The fifth series of the show
is scheduled for 2010. Well there you go, it is official! I mentioned a few
weeks ago that Russell T Davies has some ideas as to who would be the next
Doctor, but I’d love to hear your suggestions. Should there be a female Doctor?

Top of The Pops

It was announced this Tuesday that ‘Top of the Pops’ Christmas special will not
be on this year. Instead the BBC has plans to show eight special episodes of
TOTP2. However Simon Cowell has stepped in to say that he would like to buy the
rights to the Christmas special and move it to ITV. Speaking at the National
Television Awards last night he said he would approach the BBC ‘possibly
tomorrow’. This morning the BBC said they haven’t been approached by Simon.
Cowell’s comments have come to light as a lot of other people have mentioned
they would like to see the classic music show back on our screens. The Culture
Secretary Andy Burnham and pop act The Ting Tings have both called for the
show’s return. Top of The Pops was cancelled in 2006, after 42 years on air. So
what do you think? Is there a lack of good music programmes on TV in general?
Are you disappointed to hear there won’t be a Christmas special this year? I’d
love to hear your thoughts.

Well that’s all from me today. I hope you enjoyed the rather showbiz filled
Levy Letter today!
Please join me for Look North tonight at 6.30pm on BBC One.

Take care,

Peter
