Hello there and welcome to Thursday’s edition of the Levy Letter. The weather
seems to have brightened up today. The beginning of the week seemed really dull
so luckily it has been getting better. I do think that the weather can affect
people’s moods. Do you feel happier when the sun is shining? Get in touch; you

Bring back the Birch

Well I mentioned in yesterday’s Levy Letter that one in five teachers would
like to see the cane brought back for ‘extreme cases’. Well this topic has
really got your attention.
Bill got in touch with me and mentioned “These punishments made us respect our
elders and authority. Today there seems to be no respect for people or
property, birch the offenders at half time on the local football pitch, so
their mates can see what they will get if they don't toe the line.” Thanks for
that one Bill.
Gina also got in contact to say that “Whilst I was at school the cane was used
but not often, I know I lived in terror of doing something that would warrant
such a punishment and also noticed that the regular offenders didn't seem
affected by it. The conclusion must be that the threat can be a deterrent to
those on the border of offending but to those who offend regularly it does not
deter.” She also said that “Having worked in schools for 20 years as a school
caretaker until I retired I saw the behaviour deteriorate as the power that
teachers’ had was taken away.”
However Peter Hyde got in touch with his thoughts and the problems that occur
if it was brought back, “The trouble is the use of it and when it is
appropriate. Some male AND female teachers can tend to bully and threaten.
Extreme cases YES general use NO.”
So it really is a mixed bag of reaction. What do you think? I’d love to hear
any more thoughts you have on this story.

Happy Birthday Blue Peter

Well one of the longest running children’s TV show ‘Blue Peter’ celebrates its
50th Birthday today! Tonight’s edition will show past and present presenters
meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace and will have a live fireworks display.
I think ‘Blue Peter’ has to be one of those programmes that anybody of any age
will have a memory of. Mine has to be all those amazing things that the
presenters managed to make out of sticky back plastic! Did you attempt to make
the Thunderbirds Tracy Island?! Do get in touch with me in the usual way, I’d
love to hear from you.

Keep on Surfing

I’ve been reading that surfing the internet is good for you especially if you
are middle –aged or older. A research team from the University of California
in Los Angeles found that searching the net stimulated centres in the brain
that controlled decision-making and complex reasoning. The team also suggest
that this activity might even help to counteract the age-related physiological
changes that cause the brain to slow down. So the next time you are on the
internet and reading the Levy Letter remember that it could be good for you!

That’s all from today’s Levy Letter. I hope you will join me for Look North
tonight.

Take care,

Peter
