I think we should consider calling this program something besides certification or a certificate to increase the distinction between this and our "real" certifications. A group I worked with before tried to make this distinction at one point and it is still causing confusion today.
Perhaps we might name it: award or letter of proficiency or special proficiency award/letter of merit award/letter of special qualifications award/letter of qualification letter of distinction aptitude award award/letter of competence.
Sound reasonable? Maybe someone more creative than I could come up with some really snazzy name.

That is a very valid question.
It won't be $100, or even half that. We're looking at a program intended to be very low cost and delivered in high numbers. If we can work at a school-board-wide level the initial goal is to have the cost under $10 per person.
Consider also that the skills tested by LinuxCore will not, in themselves, be enough to help get someone get a career. For this reason LinuxCore will likely be launched as a "certificate" program rather than a "certification". It's a subtle but important distinction.
