I tend to agree with you SD, and it is good to give gifts, but when it comes to government and business soliciting business, that becomes another question. when communities welcome you to a neighbor hood, that is a great way to start friendships or giving away your personal concert tickets you can not use, that is fantastic and is a great way to be part of the neighbor hood or being a friend.
When it comes to government or business, $10 or under fine, I have no problem with that, what I have problems is when large expensive gifts are showered on the purchasing agents that is entirely a different matter. Yes I know it is now accepted as part of our culture. the problem comes from say a company needs 50 delivery trucks. now the delivery trucks are all about the same price. one of the companies hand makes parts of it to the absolute highest possible standard,, feeling quality and long product life is the most important factor and as a result there is not a lot of money for expensive gifts to the buying agent, the 2nd company supplies just standard run to the mill making a good profit , but supplies nice gifts to the purchasing agent, the third company supplies cheap truck from the low end of the market,, but he supplies fantastic gifts to seduce the buyers. Personally I feel buyers should buy for the highest quality possible regardless of what is offered. I know better people are seduced by gifts and friendship. the result of it is corrupt and failing governments, corrupt and failing economics. If you don't believe me , look around gifts that are used as bribes to get sales are not good.
