Emptying trash deletes messages that are "marked for deletion". Why else
would you "empty trash" if you didn't want them eliminated???

Compacting folders does nothing more than it claims, it does NOT mark
for deletion nor does it eliminate messages, they are still there and
readable after you compact folders.

I think you are confused as to the functionality of both the features.
