I think, *you* misunderstood something - when the user says to mozilla
"Delete this message", he can still see the message in the recycle bin,
but is not being seen in the inbox (or any other folder, from which he
deleted the message), but the text of the message still "physically" is
in the inbox.
Then, when he says "Empty Trash", Mozilla will delete it from the inbox
file and from the trash. And: delete not-shown messages from the inbox
file is nothing else as compact the folder.

A user doesn't know, that the message isn't yet deleted from the inbox
file, but only "marked" as deleted, he is the meaning, the message only
rests in the Trash folder. But when he empties the Trash, his oppinion
is, that he doesn't need the message anymore and so, there is no point
to still hold the message in the inbox file.
