I'm running RH6 with Xfree 3.3.5 and a 4Mb S3 Virge at 16 bpp  with no
problems. I am, however, using tthe acclerated  S3V 3.35 server .

Thanks David for your suggestion, but it doesn't help.
My Xserver runs default "-weight 565" and I tried your 555 option.

So I conclude that you're running X and Linux (RH6?) at 16 bpp with the
correct
colour spectrum in the Colormap.

There must be something wrong with my local machine then. But I'm running
the
default RH6 though (upgraded some packages such as XFree 3.3.5).

Is it my videocard: 4Mb S3-ViRGE chipset ???

May be I shouldn't bother the list any longer, if no other "16bpp-linux
user"
is having these problems with the Colormap.
