Hi there listers,

You know, I run a network integration company here in Sydney downunder, and I have to
say that I have watched a lot of Macs get switched off and replaced with a Windoze PC.

Now before you guys all scream SACRILEGE!!!! I have a couple of points to make, and I
hope you will all hear me out.

Firstly, I really like this list. Even when you guys get steamed up about things, it
still makes for interesting reading (although I suspect the ListNanny might need to
kill this thread soon).

Secondly, I have a whole stack of PowerMacs in my garage that I dreamed about doing
something useful with, and hope to soon give them to a primary school in regional NSW
where I hope they will be able to educate and entertain, which is what I know Macs
have been doing well for years.

However, the main point I want to make is about Macs in business. And i think this
relates to this debate going on about OS9 vs OS X and the ITMS website. At the
lowpoint of Apple's career, this is before the iMac was released and the company was
suffering badly, many business software developers gave up on Apple. I am sure some
of them regret this, but it is done now, and there is no going back.

So what this meant is that a prospective customer of mine, who has almost 20 perfectly
good iMac systems, and a G3 beige as their server (it is very tired) has had to decide
on moving to Windoze. They claim that it is harder and harder to find people to
support their system, and all the software vendors are announcing the end of support
or they are jacking up the price of the maintenance to reflect the fact they are in a
minority. When they rang Apple support recently, they were told that Apple did not
support the G3 beige (although this is not really surprising) and were totally
unhelpful. They looked at upgrading to OS X but felt that was just prolonging the
agony and despair when these software vendors said no more Mac, period.

I tend to agree that it would be nice if Apple could remember those dedicated few who
are standing by their older equipment, and introducing new people to Apple on 2nd hand
systems, but at the end of the day, they don't and can't really make any more money
from us PCI listers unless we buy new equipment and/or adopt OS X. Sonnet et al make
money, the RAM and disk manufacturers make money, but Apple can't, not really. I
guess if you really want to work with the latest software (and that includes iTunes),
you have to find a way to go to OS X, and that's that.

As for iTMS, there is a feedback link on the website. If you are not happy with it,
then perhaps you should make your case and see what sort of response you get. Either
that, or do what so many people on this list do - find a clever and creative way
around the problem.

Cheers

Gavin
