Hahaha! God, I can't believe I forgot to include Ching in my "credits".
Perhaps because at the time I heard her mention anything about Linux it
was still to early for it to make a real impact in me (read: make me want
to actually try the thing out).
Back in the time when I was very actively BBSing I remember Ching and some
other "big guys" talking about wanting to set up a Linux-based BBS. I
don't know if they actually succeeded, though. I was never able to bring
my Maximus-based BBS to life because of my parents' refusal to grant me
the use of the phone line (outgoing was okay with them but definitely not
incoming data calls).
Then came the Internet and we signed up with Tridel. I got hooked and
stopped BBSing. The shell access Tridel used to give was cool. The only
thing productive I used to be able to do, though, was to use it to
download something via ftp, background it (Ching taught me about Ctrl-Z
and 'bg'), log off, and then log on again sometime later, check if the
filesize matched my copy, and download it connected to the terminal
without the overhead of PPP.
I remember getting on Jacques Dimanche's nerves a couple of times, too.
Once was when I found one of his scripts lying around. I figured out how
to use it and sent mail as root to everyone inviting them to check out the
mini-website I made for my high school (Don Bosco Technical Institute
Makati). The other time was when I found a registered version of RASPlus95
that he had lying around with wrong permissions. I downloaded it, then
e-mailed him my thanks and he fixed the permissions (I presume with a
grumble or two in anger). I must have been a terrible pain to his
Administrator-hood.
Anyway, I guess this e-mail is really to add Ching (Anne Marie Celestine
V. Chua) to my list of "who influenced you to use Linux". And if anyone's
interested in "what was your most memorable Internet experience". Hahaha.
:)
