4000 packages is indeed bloated. if Mandrake doesnt fit the bill then get another
distro that will. am sure the single cd versions of caldera, suse or turbolinux
contains less than 80 packages staroffice included. then you can spend the rest of
your time to create more applications that could be put to use inside the
gov...err...a gpld voting system, a web based tax system, gpld e-procurement, gpld
document management solution etc..etc.
its much worthwhile to put a lot of time on this kind of applications. it'll save you
time maintaining the distro by giving that over to the distro maintainer while you
focused on improving your apps with each iteration of the bases e.g. kernel/glibc.
