We appreciate that this thread is officially closed but, having set it
going, we think we should report on the outcome.

After much denial on the part of Apple and quite a lot of hot air emanating
from the Bowaters, we were just called by Apple France to inform us that
Apple have decided to replace the faulty G5.  We're still in shock.

>From out point of view that closes the issue.  We did come across a friend
who has had the same problem with a Dell laptop.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice or opinions, favourable or otherwise.
We delayed our holiday a day and will be leaving tomorrow morning with our
backpacks and our tent for a much more stress-free holiday than it otherwise
would have been.
