Except that he'd have to be:

a. really hurt
b. willing to play along with the ruse

I can't imagine a guy with his pride being willing to take a DL stint if he
weren't really hurt.

I'm sure that a nice stint on the disabled list will also serve the purpose of
freeing up Papi's spot.

Is Ortiz a 10/5 guy? That would make any trade talk moot. They're pretty stuck

And spare me the chatter about Arroyo's hometown discount. I think he's been
overpaid.

Interesting fact about newly signed free agents. Can't trade them until June
15, according to the CBA. (at least that's what i think i heard the other day.)

Penny would be traded before Smoltz. THey're not trading smoltz.

I'm not giving up either. He's been too good for too long to completely lose it

Though he is looking painfully like Tony Clark that one year ... without the

I think it’s too early to completely throw in the towel on Ortiz.  How about
bringing Ron Jackson back, just to work with Ortiz?  Send the two of them off

Ray, get back to the realm of possibility. There is a zero percent chance that
Smoltz will be traded before he gets to the majors and shows he can still
pitch. And if he's successful, there's a zero percent chance he's used as a
sweetener to take Papi off our hands.

If Papi can't shake this, there's a chance that the Sox will eat his contract,
but they're not going to pay another team for the privilege.

I wouldn't put too much weight behind "class" as a trade demotivator.

Remember Arroyo's hometown discount and subsequent trade.  Now THAT was
classless.

As for Smoltz, who cares if he wanted to be a trade chit.  As they told Crash
Davis, "You get to come to the ballpark each day and get paid for doing it."

There's no way they're going to up and trade Smoltz before he throws a pitch
for them, coming off of shoulder surgery. 1) because he doesn't have much value
until he shows he can pitch and 2) it's a classless way of handling him -- he
didn't agree to come to Boston as a trade chit.

yes but doesn't Papi have a clause to stop a trade?  Anyway, if the
