Dear John,
(I've always wanted to write a Dear John letter. I've always been the
recipient.)
Numbers matter big time to Flyer and High Rail collectors. Sometimes, on
Flyer, the numbering has nothing to do with prototype series but indicate
when a particular piece of equipment was built. ie, two boxcars lettered
and decorated the same, one with 4 digits and one with 5. The 5 digit one
being more rare and therefore more desirable.
Most collectors of SHS and AM make sure that they have every
number/prototype covered and whether prototype numbering is an issue does
not really matter. I suspect that SHS and AM wisely choose to number
prototypically and therefore appease the much smaller scale market as well.
Two birds with one stone so to speak.
Numbers do matter to the Flyer/High Railers. And, as you know, that
translates into sales to the majority of the S marketplace and as a fallout,
potential new prototypes for minority scalers.
However, I must agree that I would pay a little more if the matching font
used for the numerals on the car in question could be included as a
decal/transfer sheet to give us a chance to add to our rosters more easily.
Would the Flyer/Hi Railer guys complain by having to pay a little more?
Perhaps, because the unused decal sheet could become a collectible as well.
I do know that some of the High Rail guys that model with a scale philosophy
would certainly welcome this concept.
cheers,
Andy Malette
